The evening of VE Day 80
Transcript
00:00Well, the day's going really well.
00:29It's unfortunate that we were hoping the sun would have been out to keep us warm, but we've got more people here than we expected, which shows what people are actually feeling about VE Day.
00:40You know, it's a day where we've got to celebrate the end of the World War, but also to remember those who struggled and suffered and even died up to the war.
00:49And I think in this day and age, it's important to think about we can't take peace for granted.
00:56There's not peace in the world yet, so we have to keep pressure, treating it as a precious thing.
01:03Coming together as a community is so important.
01:06So we are trying to rekindle a tradition here.
01:10By having ceremonies, we can invite youth groups to come along, the Scouts, the Guides, the Brownleys, the Cadets, to participate in something formal.
01:18And the tradition is now that we ask the youngest in the community, the Cub and the Brownleys, to help with the flag raising.
01:29And we ask the eldest in the community, or one of the eldest in the community, to participate in the Beacon Lightning.
01:35So we're trying to look at the whole spectrum of the community, coming together through ceremony, through celebration.
01:42VE Day Proclamation.
01:45Once he's read the proclamation, please head forward.

02:00It's a huge thing, I mean, to the community, and obviously from what we can see here tonight, the community,
02:29obviously come out to do all their bits and, you know, commemorate the day.
02:35The Church, Maria, it's a very hard process, you know, people have been asked to do all it.
