Trump Hails U.S.-U.K. Trade Agreement as ‘Full and Comprehensive’

The United States and the United Kingdom unveiled the broad outlines of a trade agreement Thursday, the first sign of a deal since President Donald Trump imposed across-the-board global tariffs in early April.

00:00Today's agreement with the UK is the first in a series of agreements on trade that my

00:05administration has been negotiating over the past four weeks.

00:09With this deal, the UK joins the United States in affirming that reciprocity and fairness

00:15is an essential and vital principle of international trade.

00:21The deal includes billions of dollars of increased market access for American exports,

00:26especially in agriculture, dramatically increasing access for American beef, ethanol, and virtually

00:34all of the products produced by our great farmers and our secretary, as you know, of agriculture

00:40is here.

00:41Brooke, thank you very much.

00:43Thank you, sir.

00:44You'll let the farmers know.

00:46In addition, the UK will reduce or eliminate numerous non-tariff barriers that unfairly discriminated

00:53against American products.

00:55But this is now turning out, I think, really to be a great deal for both countries because

00:59it'll be really great for the UK also.

01:01So they're opening up the country.

01:04Their country is a little closed, and we appreciate that.

01:09They'll also be fast-tracking American goods through their customs process, so our exports

01:14go to a very, very quick form of approval, and there won't be any red tape.

01:22Things are going to move very quickly both ways.

01:24The final details are being written up in the coming weeks.

01:26We'll have it all very conclusive, but the actual deal is a very conclusive one.

01:32We think just about everything's been approved.

01:37So good for both countries.

01:38This is a very important deal.

01:39This is going to boost trade between and across our countries.

01:43It's going to not only protect jobs, but create jobs, opening market access.

01:48Yes, and as you say, Donald, the timing couldn't be more apt because not only was it 80 years

01:56ago today that victory came for Europe after and at the end of the Second World War, but

02:06of course on that day the UK and the US stood together as the closest of allies.

02:12And Donald, I think even down to the hour, because you may or may not know that it was about this time of day,

02:20exactly 80 years ago that Winston Churchill announced victory in Europe, and that led to great celebrations

02:31across Europe, across America, but particularly in the United Kingdom.

02:36Literally people going out into the street, putting bunting up, going up to the palace, and so

02:43to be able to announce this great deal on the same day, 80 years forward, almost at the same

02:51hour, and as we were 80 years ago with the UK and the US standing side by side, I think

02:59is incredibly important and makes this truly historic.

03:03That close relationship has endured over those 80 years, as you know, Donald, when it comes

03:09to defence and security and intelligence sharing, of course.

03:13There are no two countries that are closer than our two countries, and now we take this

03:17into new and important territory by adding trade and the economy to the closeness of our relationship.
