00:11Fifty-six-year-old Yao Chi Weng pleaded not guilty when the charge was read in Mandarin
00:16before Sessions Court Judge Mohammed Khalid Abdul Karim on Wednesday.
00:21According to the charge sheet, the accused left five-year-old Teo Yuze,
00:25who was under his care, unattended in the locked van, leading to the child's death.
00:31Yao was accused of committing the offense in front of a kindergarten in Taman Bukit Indah
00:35between 8 a.m. and 12.05 p.m. on April 30th.
00:41He was charged under Section 31, Subsection 1A of the Child Act, 2001,
00:47for neglect or omission to care for a child in a manner likely to cause physical injury.
00:52Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharifa Natasha Syed Ahmad requested the court to set bail at 15,000 ringgit.
01:00But Yao's lawyer Goh Toh Jen asked for a lower amount,
01:05noting that the accused is a retiree who works as a part-time van driver.
01:10The judge set bail at 7,000 ringgit and fixed June 12th for the next mention and submission of documents.
01:17Yao is also required to report to the nearest police station once a month,
01:22surrender his passport to the court,
01:24and refrain from disturbing witnesses involved in the case.
01:28He later posted bail.
