00:19fined him 1,500 ringgit or two months imprisonment in default for driving underage. The sentence
00:27was handed down after the magistrate's court received a report from the Social Welfare Department
00:32and submissions from Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamed Filani Siji. The teenager, who was
00:40unrepresented, pleaded guilty on May 14 to two charges under the Road Transport Act 1987 for
00:48causing death by reckless or dangerous driving and for driving while under the age of 16.
00:54Speaking to reporters, Mohamed Filani said the prosecution had sought a custodial sentence
00:59in light of the loss of five lives, adding that such cases should serve as a deterrent amid the
01:06rising number of road accidents in Kuching. On May 14, the teen's 35-year-old father also pleaded
01:13guilty to a charge under the Child Act 2001 for permitting his son to drive without proper
01:19supervision. He was fined 15,000 ringgit in default, 12 months imprisonment, and ordered to perform
01:26100 hours of community service within six months.
