00:00Help all kids learn and grow with PBS Kids.
00:03Thank you for supporting your PBS station.
00:09On our planet, there are so many amazing creatures to discover.
00:13Hey, it's us, the Krat Brothers.
00:16I'm Martin.
00:17I'm Chris.
00:18And today, we're checking out a little-known and mysterious member of the Canidae family.
00:25Canids are animals that look like dogs, like coyotes.
00:29And African wild dogs.
00:32Canids can be found almost everywhere and come in sizes from big to small, like this fox.
00:38This is a cross fox, a mix of two color patterns of red fox, the silver version and the red version.
00:46The red foxes, including the cross, usually hunt alone.
00:49They're omnivores, so they eat almost everything, including small mammals like rabbits and mice, to bring back to their hungry babies.
00:57On average, red foxes have between four to six kids.
01:02Oh yeah, foxes are really cool animals.
01:04And you know, there's another really interesting, unusual animal about the size of a red fox.
01:10And that canid is called a dole, also known as the Indian wild dog.
01:17Now the dole is a very intelligent canid, and it lives in a pack.
01:22They may not look big, but together, they have the power of the pack, and have even been known to chase away tigers.
01:29And doles are playful social creatures.
01:35However, when it is time to hunt, the other animals better run, because dole become fierce predators.
01:44So what are the creature powers that make the Indian wild dog such a tough little canid?
01:50Imagine if we had dole powers.
01:53What if?
01:55CREATURE POWER
02:01On adventure with the coolest creatures, from the oceans to the trees.
02:07The brothers' cracks are going places you never get to see.
02:11Hanging with their creature friends, get ready, it's the hour.
02:15We're gonna sing some animals today with Creature Power.
02:20The Dole Duplicator
02:50I'm not going to tell them about the Duplicator yet. Not until I'm sure it works.
03:05Okay, testing.
03:15There's two of you! It works! I can't wait to tell them!
03:20They're going to be so psyched!
03:23Whoa! What in the creature world?
03:30What is it? What are you reading, bro?
03:33The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. Listen to this.
03:37Even the tiger will surrender a new kill to the Dole.
03:41Oh, that's cool!
03:44There's a predator in India who can take on a huge tiger.
03:49What? How can that be true?
03:52That's what it says. And it's a classic.
03:55Okay, well then let's enter the clues in the World Science Database.
04:00It takes on tigers. Okay, so it's a carnivore, a predator.
04:05They are not as big as the wolf.
04:09Smaller than a wolf, and Indian wolves are pretty small already.
04:13The Dole, for instance, do not begin to call themselves a pack.
04:18Till they are a hundred strong.
04:20What a terrible thing the Dole Hunting Pack was.
04:24And they live and work in a big group.
04:28The Dole, a.k.a. the Red Dog.
04:32This is an obscure and extremely endangered animal.
04:37Okay, I think it's obvious what the Wildcrat's next creature mission is going to be.
04:42To find the Dole, the Wild Dog of India.
04:46So let's pack up our adventure gear and get going.
04:54Aviva, Aviva, you've got to get up here.
04:57We've got to start programming Dole powers.
05:00Okay, don't come down.
05:02I'm on my way up.
05:12What's up?
05:13Our mission is to locate a mysterious, small, dog-like carnivore and...
05:17I love small dogs!
05:19I said dog-like, not dog.
05:21Aw.
05:22Like pine martens, wolverines, foxes and otters.
05:25Okay, okay, I'll start with the carnivore base programming.
05:29Hang on, Aviva.
05:31Check it out.
05:32The Dole!
05:33Now this may look like a red dog, but it's not a canine species.
05:38It's its own genus.
05:40Cue on.
05:41Whoa.
05:42Maybe I have to start from scratch with this one.
05:44Yes.
05:45This species evolved in the Pleistocene era.
05:47In the time of the saber-toothed cats, short-faced bears, wooly rhinos and mammoths.
05:54And has survived pretty much unchanged since then.
05:58Martin, where'd you learn to draw like a caveman?
06:01And today, the Dole is one of the rarest carnivores in the world.
06:07An endangered species so secretive that no one really knows how many survive in the wild.
06:13But the best guess is only 2,500.
06:17And people don't even really know much about them at all.
06:21So this is going to be a challenge.
06:23To even find them, we may need some help from Wild Kratz Kids in India.
06:28Oh, my turn!
06:31Whoa!
06:33Calling all Wild Kratz Kids in India.
06:36Have you ever heard of or seen a dole?
06:39Are they for real?
06:40Can you help us?
06:41We've got to meet the doles.
06:43Yes, please help.
06:45Message sent.
06:46Hopefully we'll hear something soon.
06:51Hmm.
06:52Nothing.
06:53Here's an idea.
06:55You know, Wild Kratz Kids aren't the only ones who can help us.
06:58Are you thinking what I'm thinking, bro?
07:00I think I'm thinking what you're thinking.
07:03We could also get some help from the creatures!
07:15Martin!
07:16Check it out!
07:17Sambardir!
07:19Langer Monkey!
07:22Peacock!
07:25Wow!
07:26This is one of the coolest things about creature adventuring in India.
07:29These animals will actually tell you where the predators are.
07:35So listen.
07:36We're looking for doles.
07:37Can you help?
07:42Yeah, a dole.
07:43That ferocious little carnivore.
07:45This is it.
07:46We're going to meet the doles!
07:57Atchoo! Atchoo! Atchoo!
08:05This is it!
08:07We're going to meet the dolls!
08:16Whoa! Tiger!
08:20Not what we were expecting.
08:22But always a treat to see a tiger.
08:25Oh, unless he thinks we're a tiger treat.
08:34Martin, make like a monkey and climb!
08:36I'm with you, Chris!
08:41Tiger, arch enemy of the doll.
08:43I don't know how any group of small animals the size of a fox
08:46could deal with a huge cat like that.
08:51Maybe the stories of the fearsome dolls are just,
08:53well, stories.
08:56Lucky tigers don't like to climb.
08:58Yeah.
08:59I never get tired of looking at tigers.
09:02Yeah, I like their orangey color.
09:05That is one cool cat.
09:07Who would believe that a pack of little dog-like creatures
09:10could hassle them?
09:11Well, if anybody would know,
09:13it would be the Wild Kratz kids who live in India.
09:16Hmm?
09:19There we go.
09:20That didn't take long.
09:21It's from Mala in Medea, Pradesh province.
09:24And that's where we are now.
09:26Hi, Cookie.
09:30Hi, Aviva.
09:31Hi, Mala.
09:32We're here in India looking for dolls.
09:34Are they the real deal?
09:36Well, I've never seen a doll,
09:38but they are real and ferocious.
09:41It's true.
09:42They're very hard to see and quite rare.
09:44But my uncle has seen them a few times.
09:47He's told me of a family of dolls
09:49that live high up in the hills in the old ruins.
09:51They den at the feet of a giant statue.
09:54Whoa!
09:55Have you ever gone there to see them?
09:57No.
09:58It's too dangerous because a tiger hunts below the ruins.
10:02Oh, you mean this tiger?
10:05Looks like today he caught us.
10:07And that means we must be below the mountain
10:09where the dolls stand.
10:14Hey, I see the ruins.
10:16All right.
10:17Cool.
10:18Let's go.
10:25Okay, I forgot about the tiger.
10:27So, Mala.
10:28How do you get past a tiger at the bottom of a tree?
10:31I don't think you do.
10:34Maybe you just wait for it to leave.
10:36But tigers are very patient hunters.
10:39Yeah.
10:41We're getting that.
10:43Whoa!
10:44Martin!
10:45Look out for the tiger!
10:46Tiger?
10:47Tiger?
10:48Tiger?
10:48Tiger?
10:49Tiger?
10:49Ah!
10:50Ah, no!
10:51Uh, Martin!
10:52The tiger's gone!
10:53Oh.
10:54Cool.
10:55Must be getting close to dolls now.
11:00I hope so.
11:02Whoa!
11:03There it is!
11:04The giant statue!
11:05Yeah!
11:06Whoa!
11:07Whoa!
11:07Whoa!
11:08There it is!
11:09The giant statue!
11:10Yeah!
11:11Whoa!
11:13Whoa!
11:14Whoa!
11:15The tiger's gone!
11:17Oh. Cool!
11:22Must be getting close to doles now.
11:24I hope so.
11:27Whoa! There it is!
11:29The giant statue!
11:32Yeah! Whoa!
11:38This place is so cool!
11:40Oh, yeah! I totally want to live here!
11:43Okay, this is my house!
11:45Oh, wow!
11:48Oh, hello!
11:50Hey, Chris! Looks like a sloth bear beat me to it!
11:55Oh, quit fooling, Martin!
11:57But I'm not!
11:58There's a sloth bear here!
12:00A sloth bear!
12:02We're focusing on doles today, remember?
12:05And look at these tracks!
12:07Oh, sorry, buddy.
12:09I'll have to come back to adventure with you, okay?
12:12We're doing a dole adventure today.
12:14See ya!
12:16Check it out!
12:17See the nails?
12:18They're like little dog-like tracks.
12:21Well, let's hope they're dog-like,
12:23and not actual dog tracks.
12:24That way, they might be the tracks of the dole.
12:27Looks like a lot of tracks.
12:29And from lots of different individuals.
12:31A pack of tracks?
12:33That could point to doles!
12:35Come on!
12:36Let's follow them and find out!
12:40Hmm...
12:45Did you hear something?
12:46By the rock!
12:47What's that?
12:48A baby rabbit?
12:50A wildcat kitten?
12:52It's...
12:54It's...
12:55It's...
12:56Some kind of little pup!
13:00Could it be?
13:01A baby doll!
13:05It must be!
13:06Yeah!
13:07And you look dog-like, but different!
13:10Kind of a dog and kind of not, so...
13:12You must be a dole!
13:16Oh, yeah!
13:17One thing's for sure.
13:18I'm gonna name you...
13:19Little Red.
13:20Uh...
13:21I think we have our answer on the dole question.
13:23She's definitely a dole cub.
13:25Cause...
13:26There's her mom!
13:27Hi, Mama Dole!
13:28Wow!
13:29That's a dole!
13:30Oh-ho!
13:31An amazing new animal for my life list!
13:33The dole!
13:34Kwan Alpinis!
13:35Really kind of small and a little long!
13:38Looks kind of like a mix between a weasel and a dog!
13:41Oh-ho!
13:42An amazing new animal for my life list!
13:45The dole!
13:46Kwan Alpinis!
13:47Really kind of small and a little long!
13:50Looks kind of like a mix between a weasel and a dog!
13:54Oh-ho!
13:56Totally fearless!
13:58Where are you going?
14:01And why the hurry?
14:06Uh...
14:07I don't think Mom is too happy with us!
14:12Oop!
14:13We don't want to hurt your pup!
14:15Ah!
14:16What's she doing?
14:18There's nothing there!
14:21Uh...
14:22You were saying, bro?
14:23Looks like a leopard to me!
14:25Those leopards can hide anywhere!
14:27One of the stealthiest of all the world's wildcats!
14:30Uh-oh!
14:31This is bad!
14:32This leopard is going for the mother dole!
14:34Uh...
14:35And may I remind you that sometimes leopards are man-eaters?
14:38So...
14:39This isn't very good for us either!
14:40Oh, Martin!
14:41How can such a little carnivore be so brave?
14:43That's how, bro!
14:44The pack!
14:45Oh-ho!
14:46Yeah!
14:47Of course!
14:48Power in numbers!
14:49These little carnivores are fluid, fearless, and energetic!
14:50And together, they are a force to be reckoned with!
14:51Oh-ho!
14:52Oh-ho!
14:53Yeah!
14:54Of course!
14:55Power in numbers!
14:56Oh-ho!
14:57Yeah!
14:58Oh-ho!
14:59Yeah!
15:00Oh-ho!
15:01Oh-ho!
15:02Yeah!
15:03Of course!
15:04Power in numbers!
15:05Oh-ho!
15:06Oh-ho!
15:07Oh-ho!
15:08Yeah!
15:09Oh-ho!
15:10Oh-ho!
15:11Oh-ho!
15:12Oh-ho!
15:13Oh-ho!
15:14Oh-ho!
15:15Oh-ho!
15:16Oh-ho!
15:17They are a force to be reckoned with!
15:26Whoa!
15:27Wow!
15:28That's some serious teamwork!
15:31Oh-ho!
15:32What a creature power!
15:34Aviva!
15:35Aviva!
15:36Are you getting this?
15:37Oh, yeah!
15:38All over this!
15:40Quick!
15:42Agile!
15:43Confident!
15:44Sleek!
15:45Fast!
15:46Intelligent!
15:47Individually, an amazing animal!
15:52Together, one big super predator!
15:56Yes!
15:57Dulls survive in a jungle of big cats with teamwork!
16:02And even bring food back to any members that stay behind at the den!
16:06Guys, can you give me a scan?
16:07Yes!
16:08Great skeletal muscular data!
16:09Just putting on the finishing touches!
16:10Hurry, Aviva!
16:11The dolls are leaving!
16:12Almost ready!
16:13Hurry!
16:14We need the disks now!
16:15We have to touch a doll!
16:16If the dolls leave, we might never be able to find them again!
16:20Hurry!
16:21Hurry!
16:22Hurry!
16:23Hurry!
16:24Hurry!
16:25Hurry!
16:26Hurry!
16:27We need the disks now!
16:28We have to touch a doll!
16:29If the dolls leave, we might never be able to find them again!
16:33Hurry!
16:34I'm hurrying!
16:35I'm hurrying!
16:36The clan is clearing out!
16:42Dole power is disappearing!
16:44Two disks ready to go!
16:49Ah, listo!
16:50Energize!
16:51And zap!
16:54Insert doll power disks!
16:59And touch!
17:01Oof!
17:02Oh!
17:03We've got doll power disks!
17:06But the dolls are gone!
17:08Hey, but what about Little Red?
17:17The little doll!
17:18The doll pup!
17:19Hey, buddy!
17:20Why didn't you go with the rest of the pack?
17:24Of course!
17:25Pups always stay behind at the den!
17:28And Little Red is going to help us out big time!
17:34Activate doll power!
17:47Quick!
17:48Agile!
17:49Sharp senses!
17:50Oh, I like it!
17:52Yeah!
17:53This suit is pretty cool!
17:55But did you realize we're just the size of a large fox?
18:02Yeah!
18:03Maybe we should just go join the rest of the pack!
18:06Come on!
18:07Good idea!
18:08We'll see you later, Little Red!
18:15Oof!
18:16The Langer Monkey alarm call!
18:18And that sandbar's getting out of here!
18:25So's that peacock!
18:27Everybody respects doll power!
18:30Whoa!
18:34Hey, Sloth Bear!
18:35How you doing?
18:36Where you going?
18:37Aw, we were just best friends a few minutes ago!
18:40Only downside is you can't make animal friends in this power suit!
18:45Still, leopards will attack one or two dolls it catches alone!
18:49With that leopard around, we'd better find that big group of dolls!
18:54Oh, no!
18:57Uh-oh!
18:58Just as I feared!
18:59A twitching cattail!
19:03A tiger!
19:04And he doesn't seem afraid of us!
19:06That's because there's only two of us!
19:10The doll's power is strength in numbers!
19:13Yeah!
19:14We really need the rest of the pack!
19:16But they're gone!
19:17We need more doll powers!
19:20Martin!
19:21Let's get out of here!
19:22I'm with ya!
19:28Chris, I think we lost her!
19:34Because there's only two of you, the tiger has the advantage!
19:38She sure has!
19:41But if there were more of you in doll power suits, then the tiger would think very differently!
19:47But there aren't!
19:49Good synopsis of the problem, Aviva!
19:54Yeah, but how's the synopsis gonna help Martin and Chris?
19:57I have something experimental that I've been working on!
19:59Koki!
20:00Jimmy!
20:01I need your help to bring it up from the garage!
20:03Hang on, bros!
20:05We're hanging!
20:06Koki!
20:07Jimmy!
20:08You coming?
20:10We're here!
20:11What is it?
20:12I call it...
20:14The Duplicator!
20:16The Duplicator?
20:18It's like a real-life 3D copier of things!
20:20A duplicator device!
20:22But it's only experimental!
20:24So let's experiment!
20:26It's an emergency!
20:27We can't shake the tiger!
20:29We need more doll powers now!
20:34Almost there!
20:36Duplicator ready!
20:38Energize and zap!
20:44Huh?
20:46Inside!
20:48Quick!
20:50It's getting crowded in here!
20:53Hi, Chris number one!
20:54No, wait!
20:55I'm Chris number one!
20:56You're Chris number two!
20:58Hi!
21:05This is weird, but totally cool!
21:08The more Martins, the merrier!
21:11Yeah!
21:12Yeah!
21:15One more time!
21:28Now we've got a pack of doll power!
21:31We better chase him away from the den area!
21:33More powerful than a 300 pound tiger!
21:45Yep!
21:46I can understand why you gave me that world's greatest inventor trophy for Christmas!
21:51Uh-oh!
21:53Hey!
21:54What's wrong with Martin and Chris number two?
21:56Oh no!
21:58Oh!
21:59Now there goes three, four, and five!
22:01Three, four, and five!
22:04That's the problem with experimental!
22:07Oh no!
22:11Oh no!
22:12We should have gotten out of these runes when we had the chance!
22:15We're cornered again!
22:16Oh, I got this!
22:18Ty-
22:20Not getting off, Martin!
22:24That's making the tiger hungrier!
22:25DoLES!
22:26Keep it going, Martin!
22:28That's bringing the dolls to the rescue!
22:30Keep it going Martin, that's bringing the dolls to the rescue
22:36Tiger knows not to mess with the back
23:00You're safe now, bud. The doll's greatest creature power and key to survival is
23:07Strength in numbers and teamwork
23:14Oh, hey little red
23:23Am I ever glad to know about dolls?
23:26Yeah, who knew they existed? And are we ever lucky they do
23:31Oh, que bonita
23:33But we gotta remember that this endangered species is going to need our help to continue to survive
23:40Living free
23:41In a pack
23:42And in the wild
23:44So the dolls
23:49Also known as the Indian wild dogs
23:52Are one amazing member of the Canidae family
23:55And there are so many more
23:57Of course, the classic Canid, the Timber Wolf
24:00Also known as the Grey Wolf
24:02This is the largest living wild Canid in the world
24:07Oh, and then there's the northernmost wolf
24:11The Arctic Wolf
24:12Now this wolf has adapted to live in the frigid snowy Arctic
24:16And a little bit larger than a fox
24:20There are the coyotes
24:22A mid-sized and very adaptable Canid
24:25And then there's the Canid that's kind of the African version of the coyote
24:31The jackal
24:32This black-backed jackal gets its name from that cool black stripe
24:37Hey, speaking of Africa
24:38That is where we had one of our coolest Canid creature adventures ever
24:42With
24:43The African wild dog
24:45We spent weeks with one particular pack to really get to know them
24:50Here they come
24:52The pups
24:53They always stay at the den
24:54So wild dogs divvy up roles
24:56There are babysitters that take care of the pups
25:00And others that go off to hunt
25:01It's all about teamwork
25:03The power of the pack
25:05All the dogs are getting up now
25:09It looks like we've got the makings of a hunting rally here
25:12African wild dogs work as a group
25:16To run down and outnumber their prey
25:18Just like the doles
25:20They're fast, tireless, and agile
25:24Another great member of the Canid family
25:27African wild dogs are the closest living relatives of Indian wild dogs
25:33And we've learned that Indian wild dogs are one cool Canid
25:36These doles are quick and agile
25:39They have super sharp senses
25:42They are smart, really intelligent
25:46And they're great at working together as a pack
25:49So doles are one of the coolest Canids in the creature world
25:54And we've got to keep on creature adventuring
25:56We'll see you on the Creature Trail
25:58To find out more about cool animals
26:19And collect your own Wild Kratz creature powers
26:22Go to the Wild Kratz website at pbskids.org
