00:00But we begin with the death of country music singer and songwriter Toby Keith.
00:04He passed away overnight at just 62 years old.
00:06He died after battling stomach cancer and he leaves behind quite a legacy.
00:10Action News reporter Caroline Goggin is live at the 92.5 radio station in Ballot-Kinwood
00:15with reaction from the local country music community.
00:18Caroline.
00:20Well guys, we are joining you inside the studio this morning
00:22where they spent the entire morning paying tribute to country music icon Toby Keith.
00:26I can remember growing up in the 90s with my mom watching his country music videos on TV.
00:31He was a legend.
00:33He grew such a big following especially during the 90s when he was coming up
00:37and this morning his fans are mourning his death.
00:40There was a statement posted last night on his official X account
00:44saying that Keith passed away peacefully on Monday night.
00:47The statement says, quote, he fought his fight with grace and courage.
00:51In June of 2022, Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer
00:53and was receiving chemo, radiation, and surgery.
00:57His country music career spanned several decades.
01:00Should Have Been a Cowboy was his breakout hit in 1993.
01:03It was played three million times on radio stations
01:06making it the most played country song of the 90s.
01:09He went on to release hits like, How Do You Like Me Now?,
01:11Beer for My Horses, As Good As I Once Was, and Red Solo Cup.
01:16Following the September 11th attacks, Keith released Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue.
01:20From then on, he became known not only as a performer but as a patriot.
01:25He went on 11 USO tours to visit and play for troops serving overseas.
01:29This morning, people across our area, they're paying tribute to Keith and his legacy,
01:33including Andy Summers, host of the Andy Summers Show on 92.5 XTU.
01:38We have a very rich history with Toby Keith here in the Delaware Valley, for sure.
01:43He had a loving relationship with XTU Nation,
01:46I think especially because we have three military bases so close.
01:50And Toby is such a supporter, was such a supporter of the U.S. military
01:55and everything that it stood for.
01:57All right, so the U.S.O. has posted on its website that since 2002,
02:04Toby Keith has provided more than 250,000 troops with a touch of home
02:09through performances in 17 countries.
02:11You can tell, guys, his legacy extends far beyond the music industry.
02:15Toby Keith was 62 years old.
