00:00Our next guest is ready to go, and we're excited because this is the first time we've had a chance to meet him.
00:05Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome from Philadelphia Phillies, Mr. Brandon Marsh.
00:10Yeah!
00:11For the show. How you doing, Brandon?
00:13Oh, man. We're having a great time. The sun's out.
00:16I know.
00:16It's not too cold. We're going to have ourselves a day today.
00:19Yeah. A few years ago, we came here. It was our first year broadcasting from spring training, and it was like 42 degrees out here.
00:29We're wearing shorts and T-shirts. It was horrible, man. But now we know.
00:35There are photos of us, Brandon. It looked like we'd been held hostage that morning.
00:41Listen, I have to ask, because you have a ton of bracelets on your left wrist.
00:45Yeah. Charity bracelets.
00:46Charity bracelets. Do you have to take them off when you're playing, or does that not mentally play with you at all?
00:53No, so I don't need it. They're like a part of my body now.
00:56Yeah.
00:56I've worn them for so long, since high school, middle of high school.
01:00But no, yeah, every one of them has their own meaning.
01:03I just take them off before the pregame shower, put the pregame tape on, and put them back on.
01:08Okay. Brandon, I had some that actually wore off and broke apart.
01:13But they're pretty resilient. You can shower and keep them on. They're made of rubber, so they're meant to be worn all the time.
01:18Yeah, they're going to snap eventually, but we got backups.
01:22There you go.
01:22I can't remember, and I apologize for asking you this question, but do you throw right or left?
01:26Right.
01:27Okay, I thought so. So that doesn't necessarily play.
01:29I'm a weirdo. I bat left, you throw right.
01:31Hey, me too.
01:32Yeah, you're like my brothers.
01:33Both of my brothers.
01:34By the way, I'm Nick. This is Casey. That's Preston, Kathy, Steve.
01:38Marissa's right over there, so this is our first time meeting you.
01:40Yeah, Brandon came walking up while we were doing the beat pile.
01:43But listen, man, it was so great to get to know you just as a player on the team.
01:48Last season was so exciting. We were just talking to Reese.
01:52Nick and Casey are lifelong diehard every single game, all season long.
01:57I'm a little bit more of a casual fan.
01:59Last season was the most fun I've had watching baseball since I was a kid.
02:04It was just a blast.
02:07Watching you guys have fun, this is what I kept saying to everybody.
02:10Watching the expressions on your face and the things you guys were going through was just a blast, man.
02:16Yeah, that was some of the best moments on a baseball field in my entire life.
02:21And I'm sure I can speak for the guys in the locker room as well.
02:25That October run we had was...
02:28There's not many words that can describe it.
02:32It still leaves us speechless at times.
02:34But yeah, it was super electric.
02:36The city of Philly was booming.
02:39Yeah.
02:39That was so much fun.
02:40And we're looking forward to trying to run that thing back.
02:43I have to admit, initially, I judge you a little bit.
02:46I thought you had the greasiest hair I've ever seen in my life.
02:49But then we found out there was a story behind it.
02:53It's clean.
02:54It smells good right now.
02:55What do you use?
02:56I mean, that had to be the most Googled thing.
02:59One of them.
03:00I know I looked it up immediately.
03:01I'm like, what is going on with this guy's hair?
03:03Yeah, I know.
03:04My mother hates it.
03:06Yeah.
03:06It looks terrible out there.
03:09And I see pictures and I'm like, yeah, it does look great.
03:12But it keeps it out of my face.
03:13I just dump it with water.
03:15And yeah.
03:15Yeah.
03:15That's how we find our edge out there, man.
03:17You know?
03:18So I want to ask, because you were a mid-season acquisition last year.
03:22And so how long did it take for you to click with the locker room?
03:25Well, to be honest, I was super nervous.
03:28It was like the first day of school again.
03:30I was super nervous.
03:31I tried to wear my best clothes over to Philly.
03:34Did Mike Trout give you any?
03:36Because, I mean, he's a lifelong resident of the area.
03:40And I'm sure he's a Phils fan when he's not playing against them.
03:43No, I mean, he just told me to go out there and go have fun, man.
03:46They're in a pinhead race over there.
03:48And he was like, you deserve this.
03:50Go have fun, Marshy.
03:52We're going to be pulling for you.
03:54And I'll be pulling for them, too.
03:55So it's a good relationship I have with those guys over there in Anaheim still.
03:59But, yeah, Trout, I mean, I can't.
04:01You were a little nervous coming in here.
04:02Super nervous, just because I didn't know many of the guys.
04:05I knew Boehm and I knew Moniak.
04:06But Moniak went over to Anaheim for Syndergaard.
04:09So I really only knew Alec.
04:12But Schwarber, and I remember Schwarber and Castellanos and Harper, you know, just the first day I was there, just taking me in.
04:18And telling me that, you know, you're here for a reason, and we're going to need you to do this thing.
04:24So jump on and get with it quick.
04:27My friend Matt is a lifelong Red Sox fan, but roots for the Phils as well.
04:31And he said at the beginning of last season, you guys as Phillies fans are going to love Kyle Schwarber.
04:35What he brings to the locker room, he's just a great personality.
04:39And we did.
04:40I mean, we loved him.
04:41You know, he hit a ton of home runs.
04:43He's awesome.
04:43He was really fun to root for.
04:44But as a teammate, Schwarber has just got to be one of those guys who, like, he kind of leads by example.
04:49Is he vocal in the locker room at all?
04:50Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:51I would say, like, him and Reese are, like, the spokesmen of the team for sure.
04:56Schwarber leads by example on off the field with his actions, with his words, everything.
05:00You know, you want to win, you want 12 on your team.
05:04He's sneaky fast, too, by the way.
05:06You see him barreling around the bases.
05:08I'm like, that dude is way too big to be moving like that.
05:11Free tacos because of Schwarber.
05:13That's true.
05:16That's true.
05:17But, yeah, Kyle is phenomenal.
05:19He's one of my favorite.
05:21And I know I have a small sample size, but for my entire life, he's one of my favorite teammates that I've ever shared the field with.
05:27And, yeah, he's awesome.
05:28Takes some pressure off of us.
05:30Brandon, you don't sound like you're from Georgia, man.
05:32I'm not really a country boy, you know.
05:34Yeah, how did that happen?
05:36I don't know.
05:36I grew up in a little north of Atlanta.
05:39Okay.
05:39We call it the north side.
05:41The north side?
05:42Yeah.
05:43But, yeah, it's like Gwinnett County, a little north of Atlanta.
05:48So, I was never really raised like on like the Georgia like farms, ranches, all that.
05:54Okay.
05:55Yeah.
05:55I lived it when I was a kid.
05:56I lived in South Carolina for a couple of years and I picked up on the accent big time.
06:00Really?
06:00I was like, yeah, y'all tell them I said hey now.
06:02You know, I used to, that's the way I spoke.
06:04Well, I was, I was, well, I was mic'd up the other day for the game and I, I said John.
06:09Did you?
06:10Oh, really?
06:11And I'm like, I've, I've only been here for a couple months.
06:13I'm already saying John.
06:15You're absorbing it.
06:16I'm wearing a John hat right here.
06:17Yeah.
06:17For the first, the first few years when I started working for Preston, he would ride
06:22to work on a tractor.
06:23Yeah.
06:23Yeah.
06:24It took a while to shake that.
06:25Yeah.
06:26Yeah.
06:26Brandon, Angel Spring Training is in Arizona, right?
06:29Yes, sir.
06:29So this is your first year doing spring training in Florida?
06:32The first one in Florida, yeah.
06:33All right.
06:34So I've been told that you and Casey have something in common because obviously when you're playing
06:38in the desert, when in Arizona spring training, you're not encountering the ocean as much.
06:43But here in Clearwater, you can head out to Clearwater Beach, but you guys share a fear
06:48of what happens beyond the beach.
06:50Is that correct?
06:50That is, that is not our home.
06:52No.
06:53Kill them all, right?
06:54That is not our home.
06:55Are you shark phobic?
06:57I'm shark, stingray, jellyfish, fish.
06:59Casey calls them monsters.
07:01Yeah, they are monsters.
07:02They are monsters.
07:03Yeah.
07:03Yeah.
07:04Do you know?
07:05Look at their faces.
07:06You want to be face to face with one of them?
07:08No.
07:09In their environment?
07:10Razors.
07:11Like they have a thousand razors that are ready to cut you in half.
07:14Yes, they are a monster.
07:16You know, there's an actual plan that Casey had worked out that involved luring them in with
07:21possums and putting hand grenades in the possums to detonate them.
07:25Yeah.
07:25He has a whole elaborate, yeah, yeah.
07:27Yeah, yeah.
07:27You put a bomb and a possum and you feed it to a shark.
07:31Then you get rid of possums and sharks.
07:33I think we're-
07:34That's great.
07:34The two of you, grown men, can't go in the ocean.
07:37Oh, because you've seen videos.
07:39There's like killer whales jumping up on shore for seals and stuff.
07:42Right.
07:42Uh-huh.
07:42Uh-huh.
07:43And I know it's clear water.
07:44It's probably not happening here, but-
07:45Probably not.
07:46I'm not going to be that one percent.
07:49So these last few years, I've been doing these sprint triathlons in New Jersey, and you
07:54have to either swim in the bay or the ocean, and I'm doing it, right?
07:58And my only hope is, okay, well, there's a few hundred people in here, so the sharks
08:01have a lot to choose from.
08:03But I'm telling you, with my goggles on, as I'm swimming, I open my eyes when I breathe,
08:08and then I close my eyes because I'm like, I don't want to see it coming.
08:11It's the fear of the unknown down there.
08:13And I just, like, my fear is that-
08:14It is freaky.
08:15My eyes are going to be open under, like, with the goggles, and I'm just going to see
08:18a giant mouth come up and eat my head off, and I'm like, I'd rather just not see it coming.
08:21Yeah.
08:22It's like, there's videos you see, I don't know if y'all have the same feed I do, but
08:25I go on Instagram or something, and you get the reels.
08:28Oh, yeah.
08:28You get people jumping off a cliff, and the camera, like, focuses once all the bubbles go
08:33away underwater, and there's a shark coming right in your face.
08:36I don't know why I get that.
08:39Because I'm not liking those photos.
08:40No, no, but you know what?
08:42If you're watching, I don't know how the algorithm-
08:43If you watch it for a few seconds, the algorithm says, this guy loves shark attacks.
08:47That damn algorithm.
08:48That's why I'm all puppies, and actually-
08:51And porn.
08:52And puppies, but no, you know what?
08:53I do like sea otters, though.
08:55I'm a big fan of sea otters.
08:56They're low-key little guessing, though.
08:58They are.
08:59They'll get you.
09:00Sea otters, they will F you up.
09:04They are, and they can be very cantankerous.
09:07You see them there with the shells, and they're just wonderful.
09:10But they'll go at you, actually.
09:12How do you feel about the gators?
09:13Because Casey really wants to see one in the wild.
09:16Yeah.
09:16No, it's the same thing.
09:17Same?
09:17I mean, I saw a photo, or a photo was sent to me the other day.
09:21There's an alligator on the shores of South Carolina.
09:24Yeah.
09:25On the beach?
09:26Are you kidding me?
09:27Yeah.
09:28Now we have to worry about that in the ocean?
09:30You got sharks swimming up through the Gulf, all the way up to the Great Lakes.
09:35Oh, 10-foot, 12-foot bull sharks?
09:37Are you kidding me?
09:38And bull sharks are the worst.
09:39That's going up through our country?
09:40Oh, yeah.
09:40Oh, yeah.
09:41Dude, how bad.
09:42So, my take on Australia is wonderful people, but there's so much there that can kill you.
09:47They have saltwater crocodiles that are enormous and are constantly killing people.
09:52Preston had a story about the, what is it, 150 of the-
09:56Snake eggs, the brown snake eggs in somebody's front yard.
09:59They have funnel-web spiders.
10:00They have, what is the-
10:01Yeah, there's spiders that are crazy, too.
10:03They'll kill you in a second.
10:05And those are up there for me for fears.
10:07Spiders, too.
10:08Arachnophobia, as well.
10:09It's like too many legs, too many eyes.
10:12I don't know.
10:12There's too much going on.
10:13You don't need all that.
10:14Yeah.
10:15Have you seen an alligator yet, though?
10:17Out here?
10:17I mean, I went and played putt-putt quite a bit.
10:21Oh, really?
10:22There's that little mini-gators you can feed.
10:25I stay as far away as possible, though.
10:27Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:28I don't know.
10:28Are they caiman, or are they just-
10:30No, they're gators, but there's a miniature golf course out here where you can feed.
10:33You can feed them at the end.
10:34Is that right?
10:35Yeah, somebody sent a link to them.
10:36The Cargo River right over there.
10:38Wow.
10:39I've probably been like five times in the last three nights.
10:43How's your game?
10:47How's your regular golf game?
10:48I mean, do you play?
10:49Okay, so I'll be honest.
10:50I'll be honest.
10:51I was awful about a year ago.
10:54I've finally got some clubs, and I've been playing.
10:56I've played like 25 times this offseason.
11:00I was trying to keep count.
11:01Okay.
11:01And the scores are slowly going down.
11:04All right.
11:04Slowly.
11:04Do you ever play Augustine?
11:05No.
11:07Preston plays a lot.
11:08Yeah, you should play with him.
11:10Oh, no.
11:10If you play a lot, I probably shouldn't.
11:12Okay.
11:12But I love the aspect of it.
11:15I love going out there with the boys having fun and swinging it, you know?
11:18Yeah.
11:19Yeah, but it's a great day if I'm under 90.
11:22All right.
11:23I've only done it like four times.
11:24All right.
11:24That's all right.
11:25Oh, it's a great day if I'm under 110.
11:27Yeah.
11:28Yeah, but all my teammates are out here shooting 76, 78, and I'm like, dude.
11:33Here's the deal.
11:33I played in a golf tournament last year with Preston, Michael Barkham from NBC Sports Philly,
11:39and there were a whole bunch of, like, former pro athletes that were.
11:42Milt Thompson, you know, former Phillies and stuff like that.
11:45I won the longest drive competition.
11:46You did?
11:47Yes.
11:47I did.
11:47You did?
11:48Yes, I did.
11:49What was it, if you don't mind me asking?
11:50It was probably, I don't know, close to three.
11:53Yeah, it was like 290, something like that.
11:54Yeah, he spanked it pretty good.
11:55I would say it was like 301.
11:56Yeah.
11:56You know?
11:56Those last 290.
11:57If I can keep mine straight, if I can keep mine straight, it'll go.
12:00Well, that was the thing.
12:01Oh, I'm sure.
12:01The fairway was gigantic.
12:03Yeah, the fairway was, like, really, really wide, so that worked out in my favor, so.
12:07You guys had a group outing a couple of weeks ago, right?
12:10Like, I saw some Instagram videos of the team being out and just hitting the links.
12:13Yeah, and the only video that showed me was me whacking a tree.
12:19That was the first hole I jumped on.
12:22And I was, no warm-ups, went straight from the cage here to the third tee box over in
12:28countryside, and I whacked a tee or something.
12:31I whacked a tree, and it was pretty embarrassing.
12:33How about good footage of you?
12:35Last season, what was a personal favorite moment that you had of your own performance?
12:39You know, I mean, any particular home run or catch or something that really stands out
12:44about, yeah, I was happy with how that went last year.
12:47Well, I grew up a Braves fan growing up a little north of Atlanta, so it's, I was, like, putting
12:53them out last year and being able to contribute a little bit in that game and have a homer in
12:57it.
12:57That was probably, for me personally, that was probably one of the better moments for me
13:03that I'm going to remember and take with me for a very long time.
13:05So that's a good memory, beating your old favorite team growing up.
13:10Oh, yeah.
13:10Oh, yeah, for sure.
13:11You either want to, growing up, you want to play for them, for sure.
13:15It's sort of bittersweet, right?
13:17I mean, you're glad to be in that position, but it's like, ah.
13:20No, I mean, I didn't have any.
13:21I had no sympathy.
13:23But, I mean, because they wouldn't have any for us.
13:24Right, right.
13:25We'd tip their cap if it went the other way.
13:28But, yeah, so the cards fell in our favor.
13:31But that series and that game four against the Braves were pretty dang fun.
13:38It's funny because when you're talking to Reese and those moments, the moments you're
13:43a part of, and, you know, Nick was getting emotional early, that will sit in the memories,
13:49the conversations.
13:50You know, you're part of a sport that lends itself to that, where it becomes the fabric
13:54of so much of what makes people enjoy life.
13:57You know, that's got to blow you away if you have the time to stop and think about that,
14:02that it becomes that important.
14:05Yeah, you know, just the memories, the relationships you make, the time spent with these guys.
14:09I mean, you go through everything from the very top of the ups to the bottom of the post
14:15together with all these guys.
14:17And, you know, everyone's away from their families for the most part.
14:20And, you know.
14:21It's a second family.
14:22Yeah.
14:22They become your brothers.
14:24Right.
14:24And, you know, it's, that's, that's, that's, those memories that we had last year, that's,
14:29that's, those are the things that we're going to remember and take with us forever.
14:32It gives me chills just thinking about it, you know.
14:35Us too.
14:36And you're still afraid of the Sharks too, a little bit.
14:38No, that won't change.
14:39Hey, Brandon, is it not lost on you that you came into a city that has a certain reputation
14:45in a good season?
14:48I mean, you came in, your, your introduction into the city was at a very, very good time.
14:54Yeah.
14:54You know, because it can, it can go the other way with Philadelphia.
14:58You know, the reputation that the town has for, I mean, supporting the team, but also
15:03saying, come on, get it together.
15:05You know what I mean?
15:05I love that though.
15:06I personally love that because I got that, I have like a football mentality about a lot
15:10of things that I do.
15:11You played football, right?
15:12I did.
15:13Yeah.
15:13I wasn't, I wasn't that good, but I liked to play.
15:15What position?
15:15I played wide out and corner.
15:17Okay.
15:17So they, not a quarterback.
15:19No.
15:19With that cannon.
15:20No?
15:21Ugh.
15:21Okay.
15:23No chance, man.
15:25But, uh, no, yeah, I, I love that, uh, just the whole city's behind you.
15:29And yeah, sometimes it could, it could be tough.
15:31Yeah.
15:32Like when times aren't rolling our way, but, uh, that's part of it though.
15:35Because when the times were good, it was only that much better than a lot of other
15:38places too.
15:39So it's like, it's so good for us too.
15:42And just as a fan and I'm a lifelong, but like it just, it was, it was a little unexpected.
15:46And then when it happened, the whole city embraced it.
15:48Um, we didn't get a chance to ask Greece.
15:50So I'd love to ask you.
15:51I don't, uh, I've not really seen Trey Turner play a lot.
15:54I'm really excited that he's on this team.
15:55Obviously he's a world-class talent.
15:57I'm excited too.
15:58We're all excited.
15:58Yeah.
15:59So what's your impression of train and, uh, you got to know him a little bit over the last
16:02few weeks.
16:02Yeah.
16:03Trey's awesome.
16:03You know, it's, it's fun.
16:04Um, just watching him as a player go, his, his work ethic, uh, his routine, uh, you know,
16:11everything, just how smooth he is.
16:12I mean, everyone sees how smooth he is on the bases, that's short and the box.
16:16So, I mean, and he, he's, he's a dude as well in the locker room.
16:20He's, he's going to be a leader of this squad.
16:22And, uh, I think he's going to fit in perfect with the boys.
16:25You know, he's, he, he loves to joke around and chirp and have a great time.
16:29But when it's time to get down into it, he's going to be the first one that steps up to
16:33the plate.
16:33So it's, uh, Trey Turner, we're super blessed to have a talent like that.
16:37And just a personality like that in the locker room too.
16:39So it's going to be a lot of fun.
16:41We're, we're, we're going to, we're going to have some fun with seven.
16:46That's for sure.
16:47I'm trying to find the right phrase and words to say it, but listen, I think we should be
16:51excited when you look at this lineup, right?
16:53Uh, offensively speaking, I mean, when you have somebody like you, you know, batting seven,
16:58eight or nine, I mean, that says a lot for how strong and deep this offensive lineup.
17:03I appreciate that.
17:04Yeah.
17:04I appreciate that, man.
17:06I don't hear that too much.
17:10But no, yeah.
17:11The lineup.
17:12I got to go back to the hair real quick before.
17:13Yeah.
17:13Yeah.
17:14I knew it.
17:14Why don't you pull in a ponytail?
17:16Well, I do sometimes during BP.
17:18Okay.
17:18But a ponytail or a bun.
17:20Whatever.
17:21I'm just, why don't you pull it back?
17:22Why, why, why not a French braid?
17:24Why not Hasidic Curls?
17:25I don't, I don't even think I know how to spell French braid.
17:28No, forget the braid.
17:29Forget the braid.
17:29I just, like, cause, I mean, I've had long hair my entire life.
17:32When I work out or sweat or do anything active, it goes in a ponytail.
17:35What about when you play center field for the Phillies?
17:36Right, exactly.
17:37Well, that's why I'm, I'm trying to give him a tip.
17:38Maybe the ponytail will be, will be good.
17:40But no, I'm the same way.
17:42Like, if I'm, if I'm like in the training room doing some, like, arm care or if I'm working
17:46out or doing something, it's all, it's up.
17:48It's getting out the way.
17:49Cause if it's, if it's, if it's going to be bumping my chair or bumping my ears, do you
17:53want to go get our hair done together?
17:55I'm in need of a cut.
17:56Hey, sports clips right over there.
18:00Hey, real quick.
18:00Then it's over to the spin class.
18:02That tattoo's not a, that's not a Ted Lasso thing, is it?
18:05Believe it is.
18:05No, no.
18:06This is, this is for my family and I.
18:08It is?
18:08Okay.
18:08That's great.
18:09My family and I love it.
18:10My sister's got one too.
18:12Hers is.
18:12Yeah.
18:13That's awesome.
18:13Love that.
18:14Yeah.
18:14Excellent.
18:14Well, listen, Brandon, great to meet you, man.
18:16Thanks for coming by.
