Canine competition at the easter gathers pups from around the country

Tails were wagging at the second last day of the Sydney royal easter show today as judging of dogs took centre stage. Talented canines from across Australia competed but there could only be one winner.

00:00Prancing into the arena and pampered to perfection, this is the Wimbledon of the canine world.

00:09Every breed has a standard, so they're looking for that dog that conforms to the standard for every breed.

00:16But we think he's special.

00:19From gundogs.

00:21As long as I've got food with me, she's basically on board with whatever.

00:25To guard dogs.

00:27This is our trusty slobberer, and we just keep him nice and canine.

00:32Even working dogs had their day.

00:34He's only had a couple of shows, but when he wins his ribbons, he loves to run around with them.

00:38Pooches in all shapes and sizes were vying for a prize.

00:42About once a week, four to five hours from start to finish.

00:46No one for their wrinkles, much like their owners.

00:49It wasn't all about looks.

00:51In rescue Labrador Gandalf won the division for best hero dog.

00:55A career highlight for the eight and a half year old, due to retire at the end of the year.

01:00He will have a really good time and enjoy being a pet and lie on a lounge that isn't burnt.

01:06But only one hound could trot away with the ultimate prize.

01:10Anton the Poodle was crowned the best dog in show.

01:13This is his third year coming in.

01:15He's only three, just over three years old, and he's won the breed every year.

01:18But this is just, yes, very special.

01:21From rise to sweet treats, there's plenty on offer at the show.

01:25But it's the dog competition that keeps bringing back the crowds year after year.

01:31It's not meant to be work, it's not meant to be hard work, it's just meant to be fun.

01:34And that's what it's all about.
