00:00what do you do nowadays when you're especially if you're going to interview somebody i always go to
00:03instagram and i see how many followers they have yeah that's the place to go right now
00:07that then you gauge like oh she had she has 1.4 million followers so i may not know exactly what
00:13reality show she was on but she's important how many followers 1.4 million oh my goodness
00:19so i don't judge me based on my instagram followers i just or me i just un-privated
00:25myself okay so but it's funny you look at some of these people that'll pop up in my feed that
00:29i don't follow and i'll click on them and they've got hundreds of thousands and then i'll go say oh
00:34is this a celebrity is this a someone i who should i know this person and you look at them and then
00:39they're just like a mom who takes pictures of her kids a normal person right i don't know what's going
00:45on with social media and instagram like that like you see you see people making brands out of
00:52themselves getting all these followers i i don't i don't really want that many followers but you how
00:58do they get that many followers what are they doing what are they doing so i was looking at
01:02some of the tricks and first of all i don't know if you notice this but all the mom bloggers or mom
01:07influencers all their pictures are really they have a lot of white and brightness to them so i think
01:12they have a special filter they put on them that's one thought and then they also write a ton of stuff
01:17in the in the whatever comment section yeah hashtag this hashtag that and i don't know about you
01:23but i write next to nothing in my instagram photos i'm like here's my photo
01:28me too i'm so boring i'm just like hashtag happy memorial day here's my daughter here's me like
01:36that's it because i view instagram i just go there for the pictures just looking at it for the photos
01:43like i'm going to use a really old school analogy playboy i when people read playboy they don't go for
01:49the articles i'm just on instagram claim that they did you know look at pretty pictures
01:56and i want to look at food porn too lately that's been my thing i've been looking at so many good
02:01things to eat and so you had an experience recently buck where you got a chance to put plenty of food
02:08porn on your instagram page at least i saw some facebook photos of food porn and i was liking it
02:12in italy it's all around you that's right so i went to italy i was gone two weeks so that's why i
02:18wasn't on the last podcast but i had the chance to eat all kinds of delicious food i learned a lesson
02:26too that in italy you can't buy a slice of pizza they bring a whole pizza to you so i took a picture
02:33of it and i posted a few of them and oh my god let's let's talk about my stomach is grumbling
02:38right now as you say this let's talk about italy pizza let's talk about real authentic italian pizza
02:43it's different it's so different you know all the food the pizza um lighter it's so lighter first of
02:49all there is no spaghetti and meatballs that's we must have made that up because they don't have that
02:54we make a lot of stuff up we made up french fries right yeah i think so so all the pizza is like
02:58thin crust and it's it's you can eat a whole it's like a medium thin crust is what their normal
03:05one man pizza is and i ate the whole thing and i still felt fine i wasn't loaded i didn't have to
03:11lay down and take a nap i was like get up and go like what do they use in their dough and it was it
03:16was just super light all of their food is so fresh yeah and so when you come back i don't want to get
03:23personal with you on this but i just remember when we were in europe and then we came back it was like
03:27your stomach has to make a major adjustment to eating american processed foods again yes i was fine
03:34when we came back but then a couple days later it hits you it feels like you've got a rock in your
03:39stomach like what is that there's just yeah it made me i don't know a lot about the what us does
03:45to their food but it made me think we are doing something we are because this it's not right how is
03:51the food in italy so good also think about tomatoes the tomatoes there are so fragrant and flavorful
03:59and here tomatoes are you know depending upon what kind of tomatoes you get you might get ones that
04:03taste like water water we did another trip years ago to costa rica and they gave us a bunch of fruit
04:09at our hotel and i had tasted it oh my god it was like pineapple i i'd never you would have thought i'd
04:15never had pineapple before in my life okay and then i was like what are they feeding us at home
04:19because this is fresh fruit like and then i got to the u.s i still don't really do pineapple i'm like
04:25i've had the best i'm not going back i can't oh my god okay so what were some of the things
04:33aside from the amazing we could talk all day about food if you want to i'm there with you
04:37but what other things just totally impressed you about italy what what did you take in and you're
04:42like oh my gosh this place is amazing because i know you loved it yeah italy was great we went to
04:46the three major cities we you know took trains to those cities we had a long long flight that's what
04:52unimpressed me oh okay how did you survive that and and now that that long flight to get there
04:57okay in a way it should be not so bad because the flight there is never as bad because you're like
05:02okay we're excited about the trip we can talk about the trip but as a parent you're leaving jackson at
05:07home so you have all that anxiety the entire time of the trip unless you're drunk the whole time which
05:12well some people might it was a little of both so it was a nine-day trip a 10 and a half hour flight
05:18okay it was fine we dropped off jackson with the grandparents like most parents do you leave them
05:23with someone safe we got on the flight we upgraded our seat i spent like six hundred dollars upgrading
05:29my seats good for you for leg room and alcohol purposes and you need alcohol but on a nine-day
05:36trip it really didn't hit me till about day five really we were in i don't know where we were at
05:42some city some cafe having the world's best food and i looked at my wife and i was like who are you i
05:49was like it hit me i was like i miss him he needs to be here i thought you meant the jet lag okay no
05:56missing jackson okay i'm sorry okay five days is when missing your child hit you five days into vacation i
06:03said we need it he should be here oh he should be here now he couldn't right because that's too much
06:10for which i'm sure some people listening do take their uh kids four-year-old five-year-old yes but
06:16for us it just it wouldn't be ready i'm not prepared you need a staff to come with you really i'm not
06:21prepared for a four-year-old on a 10 and a half hour flight because you know why especially well the
06:2610 and a half hour flight forget it but not only that when you get to a foreign country you are a fish
06:33out of water you're trying to figure out the language you're trying to figure out where you're going
06:36and your brain can't juggle those tasks at the same time it's very difficult to be have your eye
06:40on your child and worried about their well-being and then thinking about all these new things you
06:44have to digest that's it we were we were on foot we were at luggage carrying in the middle of the
06:50streets in a city bigger than new york city we're trying to find this i'm looking at google maps we're
06:55going down alleys we don't know when our next meal is so we're like you know what are we gonna do
07:02if if i had the the kid with me oh you've got a plan for his i don't even know right meltdown if
07:07you don't have food when you need it that's it and you know what else too i mean we're used to the
07:11convenience of going in we know what our kids like what little snacks they might like go get
07:15him some goldfish at 7-eleven yeah but there you don't know i mean it's a totally different world
07:20how do you find what your child's going to be happy snacking on yeah and if you don't know
07:24you're like okay he's hungry let's go to that place right there you go into that place and guess
07:29what it's like squid it's squid pasta yeah yeah yeah white tablecloth tuxedo only
07:37i got my suitcase and a tank top on uh excuse me what did you think of italian people italian people
07:46were fine uh some did you see well you flew in there right you flew to rome yeah do they still
07:51have the machine guns pointed at you when you get off the plane okay they weren't pointed at us but i did
07:55see it's not really police but it's more like a military presence yeah and they're they are
08:03everywhere they're mainly in front of like very popular monuments places to go and they're not
08:09pointing the guns at us but you do see either semi-automatic or fully automatic assault guns i
08:15don't know what kind because i don't really know guns i did take a picture of one and my wife was
08:18like don't take a picture of him they're gonna they can arrest us you know i'm like oh calm down
08:23just a picture no you know what's crazy i read this article about italy and they haven't really
08:28been as affected as some countries in europe by different issues related to acts of terrorism and
08:34things like that and one of the reasons this article was explaining why and one of it was they just
08:39don't mess around you get there and it's like hey we're here we've got our military and the other
08:43reason is they don't care about profiling yeah yeah that's true the do you want to the biggest
08:49presence of of military police that i saw one day we went on almost a field trip out of rome to a
08:56winery when we got to the winery it was it had a full gate i mean the gate was as big as you know a
09:02building one of those old old ones and steel when you open it it goes that had heavy military presence
09:11with machine guns in front of it in our they're making a statement i get do not touch our wine
09:16they probably had some ferraris back there too and some designer clothes like italy produces such
09:23great culture and you can just kind of feel it when you're there yeah and you went to you went
09:27to northern italy too yeah we went to northern because that's where you went to the winery yeah
09:31we we went to rome we went to florence which is kind of tuscany and then really north which is
09:36venice so you didn't get to the south rome was as south as you went yeah we debated
09:41long about where to go and it we factored in every city in italy i think and in the long run
09:48for us to make the amount of days where we wouldn't miss our child so much you had to
09:53narrow it down we narrowed it down and then we originally were going to just do rome and just
09:57just branch off on day trips from rome but we were like vatican oh we went to the vatican right i i was
10:03like vatican okay it'll be cool no one of my favorite amazing couldn't believe it i know it's just
10:10it's so awe-inspiring but again i was like in the vatican and i had a thought in my head i was like
10:16jackson wouldn't like this right right no no no no no we went to the vatican on easter sunday
10:21are you crazy yeah yeah it was and it just kind of timed out that way we were on a cruise there
10:26and our stop in rome was wow easter sunday so it was it was pretty amazing you had to yes was it
10:32packed the pope was out there speaking to people it was it was crazy it was surreal i got to kind of
10:37walk out right where the pope walks out i got to go like right by there it was cool i had my pope
10:42moment for a minute this is i saw you in trevi fountain too yeah our hotel was next to it oh
10:48nice oh that's a great we just woke up and walked there and then we had some wine in front of another
10:53place that i cannot pronounce oh the forum that was it okay so i noticed and you were taking all
11:01kinds of fun photos at the coliseum too you were getting into it getting into it reliving the sort of
11:06that is the spot i really miss jackson because he would have loved it we went underground uh where
11:11they used to keep the animals and the slaves and when the the bruised and beaten fighters would come
11:16down or the dead bodies that's where they would put them so we we got the exclusive tour and i was
11:22like oh jackson would love this sword oh he would have loved it but he would not have you would not
11:28have loved or survived the 10 and a half hour trip the fight now i noticed your wife's hair is lighter
11:33right she lightened her hair uh she hasn't done anything am i imagining things in the pictures
11:39it looked really it looked blonder to you know roxanne the sun is a little different is that what
11:43it is okay well anyways i'm thinking she looks like a little bit of a blonde italian guys love
11:49do they so i was she getting like cat calls and stuff did you notice that no no well for so everyone
11:55knows my wife is from dominican republic right spanish right so but she had blonde i swear i was like
12:02look at her hair it's blonde yeah she did straighten it before we went so so she looks a lot more
12:06american and and it is kind of blonde highlights or whatever so no i didn't notice anything okay i
12:13didn't i didn't see any guys i went i remember when i was there as like a teenager like in my early
12:1820s and it was like the guys don't hold back on like no no yeah they're kind of and you know what
12:26it may have also had to do with part of italy we were in because like you said you did more of the
12:31northern part yeah and what i've heard again from a cultural standpoint northern italy is a little
12:36bit more i mean look their their food offerings are completely different north versus south right
12:41so their culture is a little bit different in that they're more snooty they're more refined that's
12:46where you have all the fashion districts right and milan and and then when you get southern italy
12:52they're not as cold they're warmer yeah they're very hospitable but it's kind of the wild wild west
12:58so especially on the roadways people drive like animals and it's just lawless yes and you didn't
13:04even get to southern italy that's insane so that's kind of the difference but you just you can't go
13:10wrong you want to go back right i want to go back but i told my wife i said you know no more trips
13:15without jackson right so maybe when he gets a little older we'll go back but for now we're gonna stay
13:20local and bring him along oh how sweet you're a good daddy and mommy so let me ask you this what about
13:28what did you learn about jet lag because you seem to do okay and i always i have horrible jet lag so
13:34i always need to talk to you get any advice did you find any tips for success man i whatever i did was
13:39the worst you can do because when we came back of course the flight is super long and then we get to
13:44the u.s in philadelphia we have to go through customs that takes super long we get picked for the
13:50extra security check and then we barely make our flight and then we're just praying our bags got on
13:56we got in at like midnight back to tampa then had to uber back to the house we woke up then so
14:02tired so jet lag but we're like we have to go get our son we haven't seen him so excited then we drive
14:08two and a half hours to go get him and he i mean it was the best you know he ran to us
14:14you're back and then we get home from there and then we have to go find our dogs go pick up our dogs
14:21from different people then the next day we're like okay but it was and jackson has so much energy
14:27did you guys have to tag team him oh yes because one of you had to sleep and one of you yep we
14:32couldn't keep up our bodies weren't used to it you're used to him his activities he's not napping
14:37anymore so it was it was like okay you go you do an hour and i do an hour i know yeah that's your
14:43only so it was it was really bad but we were happy to you know have everyone back together
14:48well i'm happy we're back together buck you're back here a lot's happened since the last parenting
14:53podcast that we did yeah no nothing's happened no nothing nothing's happened um i was like please
14:58tell me do we have any kind of uh something happen news we had kelsey on the show one of our co-workers
15:04here at beasley media group she did a great job she's expecting a child and then you me kelsey we're
15:09all chit-chatting over in the break room and uh we were talking you brought this up it's a great
15:14topic so we're going to save this for next week okay what was it again it was a list of things it
15:18was a list because she's obviously cultivating her all of her baby stuff that's right and i always try
15:23to give her little tips it's the five things in my opinion that you need to buy before you have your
15:29child that you will use the most and years later you will still use them that's a good one okay we'll
