00:00A crime spree with a hefty price tag. The latest target, this Burberry store in Melbourne's CBD, just as city workers were beginning their day. The front windows smashed in, some shelves left bare as thieves made off with an unknown amount of expensive merchandise. Some individual handbags retailing for thousands of dollars.
00:23It's really concerning and I mean these things happen from time to time and have for a long time in those high end type of shops.
00:30It comes just one week after thieves crashed through a nearby Fendi store, before that a Louis Vuitton and a Dior boutique which was hit twice in March.
00:40It's absolutely unacceptable to me, the sort of thing we've seen here and we're going to make sure it stops.
00:46Concrete barriers have been placed outside other luxury shop fronts but the Burberry shop was left exposed after a tree was recently removed.
00:54The Lord Mayor has vowed to increase security measures including placing a protective barrier on spots like this one.
01:00Of course there is no absolutes in our world but here at the City of Melbourne we're doing everything we possibly can to stop these ram raids from occurring.
01:09The council will replace the barriers with permanent fixtures in an attempt to put an end to the high end crime spree.
