00:01This was quite a sophisticated operation.
00:04Police were called to the corner of Elizabeth and Edwards Street here in Brisbane just after 3 o'clock this
00:09morning
00:10to reports of a car smashing through this luxury store in the CBD.
00:15Now police understand that a stolen Mercedes was used to deliberately smash through the front door.
00:19The offenders then loaded items stolen from the store into a second car nearby
00:24and then left in a third car, driving off, leaving behind the stolen Mercedes
00:29which is now undergoing forensic testing.
00:31Police say they are searching for three to five offenders
00:34and that the car used in the crime had been stolen last Wednesday from Cooparoo.
00:39They also say that it was unusual this type of crime given not only the location but the time that
00:45it was unfolding.
00:46We have a lot of CCTV cameras in the area and also a lot of police that were working.
00:53So why it was this time in the morning and this day I couldn't forecast a motive.
00:59Now as you can see behind me contractors have been going in and out of the department store all morning
01:04undergoing urgent repairs to try and get the store back up and running for tomorrow
01:08but certainly it has been described as an opportunistic crime given the long weekend and the Easter holidays.
01:15Definitely police are appealing for anyone with any sort of CCTV or dash cam footage
01:20not just around this area but also across the Story Bridge from the early hours of this morning
01:25with cars travelling Southside to contact them as soon as possible.
