Labor commits $100 million for Maitland westbound overpass

The Labor government has matched the Liberals' promise to fund a $100 million westbound overpass at the Maitland Station and New England Highway intersection | April 7, 2025.

00:00Today, we're here just near the roundabout at Maitland with some more news from the Minister.

00:06But I do want to personally thank Minister King.

00:10She has been a stalwart for our region and for me as a local member.

00:16She has backed in my requests when I've talked to her about the growing needs of our region.

00:22We know that seven to eight people every day want to call Patterson and particularly Maitland

00:29their home.

00:30It's such an honour to have people want to come and live here, but you do need the infrastructure

00:35and services to support people when they're moving to an area.

00:39And that's what an Albanese Labor Government is doing.

00:43So Minister King, thank you for being here again in our region and thanks so much for

00:49working with me and working as part of a Labor Government to make the infrastructure

00:55needs of our region a reality.

01:00Well, you couldn't get a more amazing advocate for the people of Patterson than Meryl.

01:07She is dogged in her requests to me, but she also knows her community, knows her community

01:13deeply and well.

01:14Meryl's right.

01:15Back in 2022, when we stood together to talk about Raymond Terrace, bringing that forward,

01:21a project that had been on the books for a while, but just not delivered.

01:25And that's what the difference is with the Labor Government.

01:28We do what we say we are going to do.

01:30If we are going to construct a road, we construct a road.

01:33And you can see that all the way around Patterson, whether it's the Hexham widening, whether

01:39it's the M1 Raymond Terrace.

01:41And today, I'm really delighted to be here to make another announcement of roads that

01:46we will deliver for the seat of Patterson.

01:49You can see behind me, you've got a fair amount of traffic.

01:53Westbound, really congested.

01:56Eastbound, a terrific overpass over this roundabout.

02:00And there's not a lot of traffic there.

02:02Traffic is flowing well.

02:03The Liberals, when they were in office, did half the job at this roundabout.

02:08Today, we're announcing we're going to fix it.

02:10We're putting in $112 million to fix this interchange, to fix this roundabout, to bring

02:17another overpass for westbound, so that traffic is not congested here, as you can see behind

02:23me at peak hour, and pretty much during most of the day.

02:27That $100 million for this overpass is also a part of a package that we're putting in

02:33here to also do some further improvements on the M1, to look at two other intersections

02:40where we need to do the planning work now to try and actually unlock those intersections.

02:46And Meryl might like to talk a little bit about those and the communities that are caught

02:50there.

02:51But this is part, again, of almost $1 billion that we have put into the New England Highway

02:57to improve traffic flow all the way along it.

03:01As I said, what Labor says we're going to do, we actually deliver on, and that is the

03:05difference.

03:06Liberals make a lot of promises, made a lot of promises in the last election and when

03:10they were in government, but simply failed to actually deliver and do the construction

03:15work.

03:16And that's what we're announcing today, $112 million to fix this, which is one of the area's

03:21most congested parts, and incredibly frustrating for people who are stuck in this queue at

03:27the moment.
