I'm Karen Carson at Leading Ladies in the Terra Origin interview lounge with Haven Madison
00:08
who just blew the doors off of the King's Theatre in Brooklyn and we are so glad to
00:13
have you part of Leading Ladies.
00:14
Oh my goodness I'm just so grateful to be here.
00:16
Like sharing the stage with those women was crazy.
00:19
You were on stage with Cassie Ashton and Alessia Cara and the three of you I thought were just
00:26
did that feel good?
00:28
Oh my goodness I'm such fans of them and there's something about like a writer's round
00:32
style.
00:33
You know I'm from Nashville so it's just there's a certain energy about it and I feel like
00:36
I could write a hundred songs about it now.
00:38
I just feel so inspired.
00:40
That's amazing.
00:41
That's amazing.
00:42
Well you were no stranger to show business having been raised in the music world.
00:46
Can you tell us a little bit about that?
00:48
Your dad was always on the road right?
00:51
Yeah so I grew up about the first seven years of my life on a tour bus so I still to this
00:55
day I'm going to sleep better in a moving vehicle than in my bed at home which is so
00:58
weird but yeah I know it's been amazing and it's given me such amazing tools of really
01:03
understanding the nitty-gritty of the music industry and having nothing foreign to me
01:07
and it's just been so much fun navigating it in my own personal artistry as well.
01:12
And congratulations on making the top eight American Idol.
01:16
I'm so impressed that you auditioned with your own song.
01:21
I think that is has got to be a little scary.
01:24
You blew the judge's doors off and Katy Perry is actually someone you really look up to right?
01:31
Yeah absolutely.
01:32
I think that was such a special moment because I've always had a lot to say.
01:36
I'm very bad at shutting up.
01:38
My teachers from high school could probably vouch for that but yeah no I definitely I
01:42
have so many songs that I write and I think from the beginning I've always been a songwriter
01:46
so when that opportunity came about I knew that I wanted to lead with that and even the
01:49
opportunities since then and in the last year just unlocking just a new level of my
01:53
writing and getting to walk in new and bigger rooms has just been so amazing.
01:57
I'm just so grateful that this is my job.
01:59
Seriously I love it.
02:00
A lot of great stuff is happening and it's fun to be a girl in the music industry isn't
02:04
it?
02:05
It's fun.
02:06
It definitely has its challenges but I think it's really fun.
02:08
I love when I walk into a session and there's a female producer or just being in the room
02:12
with boss ladies with leading ladies you know it's just it's empowering.
02:16
It's amazing.
02:17
Oh I'm so glad.
02:18
Let's talk about Why Do The Pills Work.
02:21
That is so emotional that song and it makes me want to cry but it's so good.
02:27
Do you want to talk about that a little bit?
02:29
Yeah absolutely.
02:30
I think from a young age I always knew I was going to do music.
02:33
I joke that there was like no fighting chance at me doing anything else and I think I always
02:39
knew I wanted to be very human and very authentic in the words that I was writing and the music
02:42
I was putting out.
02:44
So when I first wrote this song it was almost too vulnerable.
02:46
I was like I'm not.
02:48
I can't.
02:49
I can't do anything with it.
02:50
I didn't send it to anybody.
02:51
But I just think the fans spoke for themselves and my team was just super passionate about
02:56
it and it's been amazing seeing that it's so much more than me and so much more than
03:00
the room and the guitar I wrote it on.
03:02
Just seeing it change people's lives and it's about mental health.
03:05
It's about my struggle with it and taking medication and people don't realize they feel
03:09
less alone but I also feel less alone because they're responding and reacting to it.
03:13
So it's just been such an intimate experience.
03:16
And Castle, that addicting melody.
03:20
It's so addicting.
03:22
When is that song coming out?
03:24
That song is coming out May 9th.
03:26
I'm so excited.
03:27
It's the first time I've said the date out loud so I feel like I'm like waiting for the
03:29
thunder.
03:30
It's here.
03:31
It's here.
03:32
Almost.
03:33
So tell us about Castle and what that was like.
03:35
It's a I think such a relatable song for so many people going through.
03:40
I mean everybody's got some kind of you know mental issues like with depression maybe or
03:46
anxiety whether you're high or low on it.
03:50
Everybody does.
03:51
Yeah I think love sucks until it doesn't honestly and so this song was kind of about maybe one
03:57
day there's going to be a pivot when it doesn't and there's going to be somebody that is worth
04:00
tearing down these really tall exterior walls that I've built up and letting them in and
04:05
letting them know that I'm broken but that it's beautiful and they'll appreciate that.
04:10
So it's a very hopeful song.
04:11
I wrote it about somebody I haven't met yet but I'm excited to meet and yeah I think the
04:15
melody is something so different vocally.
04:17
It took it took months of learning how to sing it different ways to figure out the right
04:22
way.
04:23
So yeah.
04:24
It's addicting.
04:25
I mean it is now.
04:26
It's definitely one of those things where it's it has taken a lot of effort to get to where
04:29
it is but it just feels so right and so authentically me and I'm really excited.
04:33
You're so amazing.
04:34
Just like this beautiful soul and you are so I mean I've seen your videos and I've actually
04:42
you know listened to your songs so much but seeing you live is a whole different story
04:47
and you got a girl.
04:49
Thank you so much.
04:50
And congratulations on all your success.
04:52
Looking forward to Castle.
04:53
May 9th.
04:54
May 9th.
04:55
I'm excited.
04:56
I'm excited.
04:57
Thank you so much.
