At the 'Sinners' premiere, Miles Caton talks to THR about his unique audition experience and how he worked with director Ryan Coogler to shape the musical sound of his character. Plus, he talks about what it was like working with Michael B. Jordan.

00:00Congratulations on this film. You've toured the world, you've performed at the

00:04Grammys, the Oscars. What is this experience like for you to be stepping

00:08onto the big screen? Man, this is an incredible experience. I never thought

00:13that I would reach this moment in my life this soon. I've been working, you

00:16know, towards, you know, getting to a place like this, but to be here right now,

00:19I feel super blessed. I heard that your audition process was a little bit like

00:24kept under wraps, so can you talk about that experience? Because you didn't know

00:27a lot going into it. Yeah, I didn't know a lot. It was definitely super

00:31under wraps. I got a small scene for the audition where I was just like kind of

00:35playing the guitar, and I find out he's a kid, he's a sharecropper, and so I'm

00:39like, yeah, this is something, something interesting that I think I could be a

00:41part of. And then once I got the full script and I read the whole thing, I was

00:45like, wow, like this is, this is crazy. Well, I know, of course, music is such a big

00:51element and a big part of this movie. What were those conversations like with

00:55Ryan Coogler in order to get music and have that be a big part of the film?

00:59Yeah, I mean, Ryan definitely, we had many talks about my character and, you

01:03know, how, how the music would evolve. He actually sent me like an essential blues

01:07playlist where I was kind of able to listen to like artists like Charlie

01:11Patton, Howlin' Wolf, you know, and all of these guys, and they kind of helped to

01:15shape, you know, how my character would sound. What sort of music were you

01:19inspired by when you were kind of getting ready? And I also heard that you

01:23were also part of the soundtrack. Yes, yes, I was a part of the soundtrack. I

01:26got to work with Lou Vigorenson. He was incredible, man. So I got to do a couple

01:31songs on there, but I can't wait for y'all to hear, yeah. And also, of course,

01:35working with Michael B. Jordan. What was it like in that first day on set with

01:39him? Man, that first day on set, the energy was super high, man. He's been a

01:44real inspiration to me, you know, to be working with him right now at this, at

01:47this moment, I feel super grateful, man. Yeah. And of course, there's been a lot

01:51of iconic vampire movies throughout cinema. What is one that really changed

01:55the game for you? Ah, man, there's so many, but one of my favorites is Eddie

02:01Murphy's Brooklyn Vampire in Brooklyn. Yeah, yeah, I love that one. Yeah. And

02:06then this one's gonna be a game changer for a lot of people now. For sure. This

02:10is one that's super different. You know, it's unlike any movie I've ever seen.

02:14There's so many different genres in one, and I really think everybody's gonna be

02:17able to kind of take, you know, their own take from it.
