A dramatic protest unfolded on Thursday in the capital as prominent attorney Israel Khan, Senior Counsel, destroyed a portrait of Chief Justice Ivor Archie.
Transcript
00:00Senior counsel Israel Kahn, who heads the Criminal Bar Association, physically
00:04dismantled an image of Chief Justice Ivor Archie. Holding the frame portrait
00:09over a bin, Kahn shattered the glass with a baton before cutting and tearing the
00:14Chief Justice's image from the frame, declaring that Archie did not deserve to
00:19be among the nation's esteemed justices.
00:22I don't want this photo to be among the other Chief Justices.
00:31He then called for an inquiry into the Chief Justice's role in the resignation
00:36of former Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar. He wants Prime Minister
00:41Stuart Young to initiate an investigation into the Chief Justice's
00:45conduct. Two weeks ago, Ayers-Caesar secured a legal victory at the Privy
00:50Council, which ruled that she had been unlawfully pressured by Chief Justice
00:54Archie into resigning her position as a High Court judge in 2017. The ruling
00:59means that despite not having functioned in the role for years, she
01:03remains legally entitled to salaries and benefits dating back to her
01:07appointment. Kahn said that the Privy Council had found that Archie acted
01:11unlawfully, and as such, he submitted that this could constitute misbehaviour
01:17in public office.
01:19The misbehaviour in public office is a criminal offence. So the Criminal Bar
01:26Association is of the view that he committed a criminal offence in order to
01:30remove the sitting judge, because he did not want to have an inquiry in order to
01:36find out whether she should be removed, because a lot of information would have
01:42surfaced where it would have shown that Archie himself contributed to that.
