PM pledges to fix 'Victorian Era' northern transport system

The Prime Minister has vowed to upgrade struggling rail services between Manchester and Yorkshire as he announced £415 million in transport funding. It comes after delays to the electrification of the TransPennine route upgrade between Manchester and York following the dropping of the Phase 2 HS2 extension. 00:00We've been able today to announce a huge, the biggest ever, amount of money going into transport in the north, £1.7 billion.

00:09So that's a huge package for all sorts of transport.

00:13But the one in particular I wanted to emphasise is £415 million extra going into the TransPennine Railway and the upgrade of that.

00:22So that's a £10 million project. It's a huge project and it's going to increase the efficiency of that service hugely.

00:31It's going to double the amount of seats so the capacity will be much bigger.

00:35So those of you that are working on the fabric for the seats, you're going to be really busy because whatever you're doing now,

00:42we're going to need twice as many of them when we get to this and we hope to ensure this is done early in the 2030s.
