Malaysia Media Council founding board likely to be formed by Hawana 2025, says Fahmi

The founding board of the Malaysia Media Council (MMC) is expected to be established by National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 in June, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.  Speaking at his weekly press conference in Putrajaya on Wednesday (March 19), Fahmi, who also serves as the Madani Government's spokesman, announced that the Malaysia Media Council Bill 2024 was passed in the Dewan Negara the same day.   He described it as a historic milestone toward fostering a more democratic, free, and ethical media landscape in the country, and emphasised the importance of safeguarding press freedom while promoting responsible, accurate, and ethical information dissemination. 00:00The last thing I would like to inform you is that the Laws of the Malaysian Media Assembly

00:10have been passed at the State Council today.

00:13So, the Minister-General has brought it and rolled it up and it has been passed.

00:22This is certainly a historic moment in which we have passed at the National Assembly and now at the State Council.

00:33The next step is to gain the approval of my father and then to strengthen it.

00:44We expect and hope that after the National Journalist Day or HAWANA,

00:50the foundation of the Malaysian Media Assembly can be formed and the process of forming the Assembly can be accelerated.

01:00So, praise be to God, in this effort, I believe we will be able to ensure efforts to increase the credibility of the media

01:10with the Malaysian Media Assembly itself setting high standards and standards of governance.

01:17The Madani government is committed to strengthen the country's media industry

01:22by ensuring that media freedom continues to be maintained

01:25as well as ensuring responsible, accurate, healthy and ethical information delivery to the public.
