00:00Today we are announcing Australia's first ban on machetes here in Victoria.

00:06We are doing this to keep the community safe particularly because as we have seen on many a tragic occasion machetes are destroying lives.

00:15They're hurting people, they're damaging the community and we want to destroy machetes.

00:21We've seen an increased use of machetes over the past couple of years

00:26and in particular this involves youth gangs, street fights, assaults, carjacking, aggravated burglaries and home invasions.

00:35So making this decision is very much welcomed by Victoria Police.
