Tobin and Leroy discuss the Miami Dolphins signing Zach Wilson and Josh Daniels to start up free agency. Leroy cannot understand why Chris Grier keeps doing this to himself with signing players coming off of bad injuries.
Transcript
00:00Leroy, you wanted to talk Miami Dolphins.
00:02What do you got, buddy?
00:02What struck your, what got you all in a tizzy yesterday?
00:07Here's what happens in the first 12 seconds of free ages.
00:13You want your team to make a splash.
00:15You see everybody else making the splash.
00:18They don't you think we suck.
00:23I have a different spin on this.
00:25And this drives me crazy with Chris career and this is a valid
00:35complaint.
00:38One.
00:39The only good thing that you have is to show everybody that you
00:44draft.
00:45Well, and the only way you can do that is keep the guys you
00:50drafted.
00:51This team has had more guys walk that they have drafted than
00:57I've ever seen in football.
00:58Ginks.
01:00And then I've ever seen in football.
01:02It's crazy.
01:05Now, did you find Holland thing?
01:07Yeah, I get that.
01:08But it was on the wall.
01:09Not Christian Wilkins.
01:11Hunt Van Ginkle Van Ginkle.
01:15You just let him walk for nothing and I'm lobbying right
01:21now.
01:23For Laramie Trump tonsil to be in the Hall of Fame.
01:27Why that guy has garnered more draft picks in the history of
01:33the NFL more than Herschel Walker.
01:36Yeah.
01:37That guy is getting people are giving up everything for him.
01:43He was here.
01:44He was let him go.
01:46He got the cheetah.
01:47Okay, but I'm just saying you understand that.
01:51For a guy who everybody complains about his decisions and roster
01:55moves.
01:56The one thing that would help it is keeping the guys you're
01:59drafted.
02:00I don't even think this is my biggest concern or complaint
02:04with there's more.
02:04Okay.
02:07Now.
02:09What has been the biggest issue with this team the last three
02:14years?
02:15Injuries.
02:16Correct.
02:17Why would I sign a broke-down player?
02:22Two of them.
02:23Well.
02:26Two.
02:27One guy signed the contract limping.
02:30He's gonna be ready for May.
02:32He's been science to write.
02:34That's what they say.
02:35I don't want a guy being science.
02:37I want active participants.
02:41They said yesterday they signed this James Daniels from the
02:44Steelers who they say is very good and I'm not here to I'm
02:47not here to judge.
02:47No, but I was very good before he tore his Achilles week
02:53four.
02:55You understand what I'm saying?
02:57I understand if listen, let's put this on.
03:02Something different.
03:04Let's say.
03:08That you're dating somebody.
03:13And they don't treat you.
03:14Well, and they're non-committed.
03:17Yeah, and you say, you know what?
03:21Let's just call it off.
03:22Let's go our separate ways or whatever.
03:25Your next relationship is going to be anything other than the
03:31last guy or person.
03:32You dated different type of person.
03:34You're saying right?
03:34I got you unless you have a type.
03:36Why do you keep signing the same type of players?
03:41So let's be clear.
03:44As much as I love to run arm said, you know what that deal
03:50this right?
03:52If he comes back, he gonna give you 12 to 15.
03:58Right?
03:58Sure.
04:00You just signed a guy who tore his Achilles.
04:04You brought in the safety.
04:06Now.
04:07I'm not gonna make a big deal about signing the safety.
04:11He's a good player.
04:13But he was banged up last year.
04:15Yeah, of course.
04:16Okay, so you let your Von Hollen walk you save some money by
04:20bringing another guy in.
04:23That was plagued with injuries last year.
04:25Now, there's two ways to think of it.
04:29Some people could think of like me that I we signed and broke
04:34down players.
04:35We need active participants.
04:37I don't want to sign anybody in hopes that they are ready.
04:41I need to sign guys who are ready to go because they say
04:44my ass is probably on the hot seat.
04:47They say James Daniels is going to be ready to go.
04:49Okay.
04:52Can I tell you a good news though?
04:54You said that about Bradley Chubb.
04:56I'm still waiting for Bradley Chubb to play.
04:59Can I tell you the good news though?
05:00Brady science.
05:02I didn't say he was beating science.
05:04He's been out as long as me.
05:06I didn't say he was being sad.
05:07When's the last time I played football night?
05:102001 2000.
05:13When's the last time you saw Bradley Chubb play 2022 323?
05:19Yeah, and he was injury prone when you trade it for he was
05:24so what he doesn't care.
05:26Why do I don't know what to tell you doing the same thing?
05:28I don't know what to tell you.
05:29Like look the one thing you can say with front offices, right?
05:33Is that there is philosophies and Chris Greer?
05:36Does not believe in injury prone.
05:38He doesn't think it's a thing.
05:39I don't get it, but he doesn't like this.
05:42We know about him.
05:42This is not like what happened yesterday should not be shocking.
05:46I hope it works out, but it shouldn't be shocking.
05:49Are here's is are we past the point?
05:54For hoping that it works out.
05:56Oh, yeah, like it we need some some guys who are you can depend
06:02on and I'm not here.
06:04I'm not saying these guys aren't good players.
06:06I'm not saying that at all, but to be fair to me, it was the
06:11same thing.
06:12I said to you about tour and Justin Herbert.
06:16Yeah, it had nothing to do with their talent.
06:19I'm not drafting a guy who have questions about his health
06:23that early in the draft.
06:25That's it.
06:27Tour can end up being a Hall of Famer, but I'm justified for
06:32thinking what I was thinking back then.
06:36That you need guys on the field.
06:40The last three years have been plagued with injuries.
06:44What is the one thing I'm going to stay away from Steelers
06:47Reddit says he's very good.
06:50They missing them already.
06:51They are missing them.
06:52That's where I always go when I want to know like should I be
06:56excited about a player in a position that like his heart like
06:59guard?
06:59I don't know and I go to Steelers red.
07:01They're like, oh, he's good.
07:06Zach Wilson in South Florida with the Milfs dangerous game.
07:13We got he could probably hang out with a Kiffin.
07:18Oh, yeah up in Boca.
07:20I don't know.
07:21He may he may go for something different down here though.
07:23The Zach Wilson signing was very underwhelming.
07:26That was very underwhelming.
07:27Like a little splash.
07:29It was like because you want to know the thing that is crazy
07:32about it.
07:33Like he gets six million dollars, right?
07:35Which I know is not huge quarterback money, but it's not
07:38nothing and I'm thinking of myself.
07:41He didn't take a snap last year.
07:43Why doesn't he get the minimum?
07:44Like, why does he get six million dollars with a chance to
07:47be 10 because that's a backup quarterback, but Leroy here's
07:50doing last year.
07:52You realize they're backup quarterback.
07:54He wasn't a backup last year.
07:55Wait, he was a backups backup.
07:56Wait, you do realize there are quarterbacks playing backup.
08:02Making 10 million plus.
08:04I understand that.
08:05But you want to know something?
08:06They actually had playing time last year.
08:08This guy's only credentials are he was drafted by the Jets
08:10very high.
08:11Yeah, but he's gone.
08:12He's if he gets hurt.
08:14He's the guy.
08:15I'm very nervous about it.
08:18I'm very nervous.
08:19Oh, he's not very like he's not been good.
08:21You the first day of minicamp.
08:24All the signing is going to be doing stretches with the
08:27trainers.
08:27I get it.
08:28He's got a piss whistle and Marcos sneaky.
08:31Oh, hey, mobile and sneaky mobile for intangibles.
08:35Wait, was it him or Daniel Jones who tripped on Daniel?
08:38That was Daniel Jones.
08:41But I don't know.
08:43I'm just like, I mean, he's going to be the third quarter.
08:46Here's the point.
08:47I make is there to drop somebody?
08:48No, they're going to get a veteran.
08:49Second, when we started this, have this guy back here when
08:53we walked into that door.
08:55I said, it has to be amazing.
09:00That the healthiest guy that you bring into your organization
09:04for as of right now is Zach Wilson.
09:09Now to be fair.
09:13All of my complaints are warranted.
09:17I'm telling you the injury aspect of it, whatever.
09:21It's warranted based on what this team has been the last
09:24three or four years.
09:26Yep, but I do understand there's more.
09:29Off-season I do too, but, but here's the problem.
09:39Can we get somebody closer to do a healthy?
09:48You understand what I'm saying?
09:50I don't know who you want.
09:51What do you want?
09:51Dylan Gabriel?
09:52Like, no, I don't know.
09:53I'm just saying, I don't know what you mean.
09:55I'm just saying that when free agency starts, you go, here
10:00are all the things we need.
10:02You didn't need a safety check.
10:04You didn't need an offensive lineman check injury, right?
10:11You need a whole bunch of defensive players and a whole
10:15bunch of offensive linemen.
10:17Well, they really only need like one more offensive lineman
10:20now.
10:21You here to be successful.
10:26You need probably five solid offensive linemen.
10:36Two guys who are slightly above average because you're going
10:41to need seven guys.
10:43Yeah, they signed a swing guy yesterday.
10:46Who's going to be I'm sure their backup of all things.
10:48You don't even know his name.
10:49It's Boram.
10:49I think.
10:51Yeah, that's the one.
10:52I did the same thing.
10:53You know, the Steelers were like, oh, no, I'm going to miss
10:55them. I look at the Bears and they're like, thank God that
10:57guy's gone.
10:58Yeah.
10:58Well, he looks like he's a he's a utility guy.
11:00He's basically new Eichenberg for sure.
11:02I think I heard I told you you need a guy like that.
11:05Well, thank God.
11:05We don't have Eichenberg.
11:06No, no, no.
11:07Okay.
11:08Wait, he didn't get signed the first day of free agency.
11:10I'm stunned every time you say that, you know what I think
11:14Have you ever seen Thor with the rock guy?
11:20New Doug.
11:20He goes new Doug.
11:26Hello, new Eichenberg.
11:28So like I'm just this is already going to make Daniels my
11:32favorite player because he's not Eichenberg.
11:36I'm not.
11:39I understand there's more time.
11:42So I'm not saying it can't be fixed or the things that you
11:47need can't be but what you're saying is and it is true.
11:53The first not even 24 hours of free agency has been Chris
11:59Greer's mo his whole time, which is I'm going to lose my
12:04high draft picks for nothing and I'm going to sign really
12:08players who have played well, but had some issues the last
12:12year or so because I can get them on the right, right?
12:16Not like here.
12:20There comes a time in life.
12:22Where the quality of what you're getting?
12:28Is worth the cost.
12:32You can't keep bargain shopping forever.
12:36At some point, you got to get quality players that you know
12:42with the money you're giving him is going to produce that
12:46now to me.
12:48Sometimes free agency is a little bit deceiving in that
12:52in that if there's a competition for your your talents, you
12:58might get a little more than your your value.
13:02So I understand that.
13:04Yeah, I mean like look, they were guards yet.
13:05There was a guard who signed this morning for like 80 million
13:08dollars, right?
13:09So they got him.
13:10Yeah, they got him at a discount rate.
13:11I'm sure if he has a healthy year, he'll probably come back
13:14and be like, give me more money Bobby, right?
13:16But everybody says his talent if is if he's right is good, but
13:21it's just such an it's like it's such a scary thing because
13:24it's like if it doesn't work out, I want it doesn't work out
13:28and he doesn't come back all the way healthy and it's a very
13:30scary injury, right?
13:32You know, I just if we're going to be left in the same spot
13:36where two is running for his life because you rolled the
13:39dice on a guy's Achilles fixing, right?
13:44It's going to be it's one of these things.
13:46I know he's going to say you guys are more concerned than
13:48we are.
13:48It's like cool, but you understand why we're concerned,
13:52right?
13:52Yes, and so.
13:57I get there's a lot of time, right?
14:01And I get that there's you know more work to be done.
14:10But it seems like all these other teams had a plan the second
14:16free agency started like you see what Chicago did a lot, right?
14:22Like they're like we're going to get our offensive line, but
14:26they have a rookie quarterback like they're going to have
14:27dough.
14:29Okay, so does Minnesota.
14:32Right now they paid to it like that.
14:33That is that is part of the so does New England, but rookie
14:40quarterback like everybody who spent big yesterday all has
14:42rookie quarterbacks.
14:43And here's another thing that a lot of the teams that had a
14:50lot of success.
14:51Most of their money is quarterback in line offensive defensive
14:56line, not really wide receivers.
14:59No, right.
15:01So I would say this.
15:07There's two things that this team needs and I don't know whether
15:15it's a schematic thing or personnel thing.
15:21You need to be dogs up front.
15:24You need to be more physical up front and you need to have a
15:27running game that reflects that.
15:30Because I said it all last year.
15:33I've said it the year before that there's going to come a
15:36point in time where you have to line up against the eight-man
15:40box and get a first down to end the game or win a significant
15:46game.
15:46Yep, and this team can't do that.
15:49And so everything that they do.
15:54Should look at what has happened in football and look at how
16:01teams have been successful.
16:02There's a couple outliers, right?
16:05But you look at how teams have been successful.
16:09That's stopping the run and running the football in between
16:13the tackles.
16:13What's a bigger concern for you though?
16:15Is it a bigger concern that you signed a good player who's
16:18coming off a really critical injury or that we're one snap
16:21away from Milf Hunter?
16:24See.
16:27I believe this.
16:28I believe this was Zach Wilson.
16:34And I've always and I've said this to you a lot that.
16:40If you draft a quarterback that has a lot of talent but needs
16:48a little bit of development and throw him on a crap team on a
16:52crap organization and he struggles.
16:57Then we look at that as far as oh, this guy was a bust.
17:03The talent was always there.
17:05The arm strength was always there.
17:08Okay, what were the pieces around him?
17:11So while I get people saying we only got Zach Wilson.
17:18These guys have done great with tour.
17:20We all thought tour was trash or was going to suck to was never as
17:25bad as Zach Wilson.
17:25Like whatever people want to say about but on whatever people he
17:28never had the talent around him that but it doesn't matter it
17:32whatever people want to say about to a Zach Wilson to it was never
17:36close to a bust like that.
17:37It's not even close but again, but again.
17:42It's the only organization that could take a Hall of Famer and
17:46make them 5 and 12.
17:47Yeah, it's true.
17:48Okay, the Jets quarterback if they took a Hall of Famer and he was
17:52only 5 and 12 it has become what the hell you think that's going
17:55to be the Zach Wilson, Gino Smith, Gino Smith, Sam Donald quarterback
17:59Sam Donald still play quarterback.
18:02I just got a Hyundai, right?
18:03So all of the evidence is out there.
18:10Is it the quarterback or the organization?
18:13So there's some talent there.
18:17Now, I don't know what people what kind of talent you expecting in a
18:22backup quarterback hell if he could start he'd be starting everybody.
18:26There's a bunch of teams starving for quarterback play.
18:29Sure.
18:30So your backup is going to be exactly what oh, he has talent, but
18:37hasn't been in the right situation.
18:38So I'm not upset that the Dolphins on Zach Wilson.
18:45Like he's a backup quarterback Mac Jones was out there.
18:50He's a pro bowler.
18:53Pro Bowler.
18:53I am listen.
18:54Oh boy.
18:55Gritty.
18:57A guy named McCorkle came from the South.
19:01I'm just telling.
