00:31Music is more than just sound for Kunata Allain.
00:36It is an expression of self, a reflection of culture and a spiritual journey.
00:41Set to release a brand new song next week along DJ J Lava,
00:46Allain, who may be best known as the creative force behind the Dirty Dozen brand,
00:51is a talented artist, composer and producer in his own right.
00:56He sat down with TV6 to describe his creative process.
01:00For Allain, music is not just about making beats and writing lyrics.
01:05It's about tapping into a deeper energy,
01:08one that connects with people on an emotional and even spiritual level.
01:23His process is deliberate.
01:25He aims to create music that has meaning and resonates with himself first
01:30and then with those around him.
01:44I try to write something that it must mean something to me.
01:52And sometimes I don't even know what that meaning is, but it feels a certain way.
01:56Allain has spent the last two years fine-tuning his sound,
02:00collaborating with some of the industry's best.
02:03His latest project, a collaborative album with DJ J Lava,
02:08Sacred Mass, is both a movement and a musical masterpiece.
02:13We have our first single as a production group.
02:16Our group is called Sacred Mass.
02:20And the name of our first single is also called Sacred Mass.
02:23The concept behind the song reflects the essence of Caribbean spirituality,
02:28finding peace through rhythm and movement.
02:50Spread your hands and release it.
02:53Roll your waist like the ocean.
02:55Ride the wave of emotion.
02:58And release all your tension.
03:05But music is not just about celebration.
03:08It is also about reflection.
03:10The lyrics, the guitars, the percussions all have a special meaning to Allain.
03:19I thought, hey boy, you're going and you're singing about,
03:22we're celebrating life and then you go on into go down, go down, go down.
03:27And it's because I didn't really understand the history of what that means as well.
03:32And in many faiths, including the Baptist faith, it must go down.
03:35You have to go down deep to come up.
03:37You go down because that's where the knowledge and the history is.
03:41Another one of his upcoming projects, Freedom,
03:44was inspired by the global uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.
03:49And I wrote this song right in the same spot during the pandemic
03:53because it was a time when everyone was,
03:56boy, I have to wear a mask, I have to do this and I do feel free.
04:01And I thought to myself, like, if we were faced with freedom, would we even recognize it?
04:11For Allain, true freedom is found in gratitude.
04:14He encourages listeners to appreciate what they have rather than focus on what they lack.
04:20Each verse, I ask you to look at freedom in a way.
04:26You remind yourself of the things that you have in your life.
04:30Because it's very easy to be like, boy, this happened to me, that happened to me,
04:34or I don't have money, or I don't have this, or I lost this, or this was done to me.
04:39And sometimes we lose sight of what we have.
04:42We lose sight of, even within this country, all the things that we have challenges with.
04:46But it's no other place like Trinidad, you know, I've been out there.
04:50Out there and easy.
04:52Through his music, Kunata Allain is not only creating art, but also inspiring a movement,
04:58one that embraces Caribbean culture, deep self-awareness, and the power of sound.
