Iceland in Crawley reopens after £240k refurbishment

The Iceland store in Broadfield, Crawley, reopened on Thursday, February 20 following a £240k refurbishment. We take a look around and speak to area manager Becky Copper

00:00Hi, I'm Mark Dunford from Sussex World and the Crawley Observer, and I'm here today for

00:05the reopening of the refurbished Iceland store in the Broadfield Barton in Crawley.

00:11I'm going to go and have a sneak preview, I'll show you a video, and I spoke to Area

00:14Manager Becky Copper about the changes and how the customers are going to benefit from

00:18them.

00:20So I'm Becky Copper, I'm the Area Manager for Iceland & Food Warehouse across the south

00:26coast.

00:31So we haven't refurbished this store in quite some time, over 20 years. We've had mini-relays,

00:36but not to the substantial amount that we've had most recently. It's a very busy store,

00:43which the locals use for convenience as well as their large weekly shop. We've run an online

00:51service out of here as well, which is three vans, which is a very busy store. Why we've

00:57re-laid it, it was very tired looking and it needed to be brought up into new Iceland

01:04and the new branding. So as you can see in the store, we've got all the new branding,

01:08the marketing, the new shelves. Part of the problem that we have here, where it's such

01:13a busy store and we've got a small square footage, it over-trades for the space that

01:18it is. So the challenge was really for us to get maximum range that we could in for

01:24our customers, what they want to buy, and available on the shelf all day. So that is

01:30a challenge with the square footage that we have.

01:38It's very bright and it feels bigger. So you can see the new shelving along the back

01:44wall here. It gives us more capacity to hold more onto the shelves. And with the over-stocks

01:51there, we've got it available should it become unavailable on the shelf.

01:55So we've got extra range across grocery lines on the back wall, so crisps and drinks and

02:08some impulse purchase lines, yes. The main benefit for the customers, they'll see and

02:12feel a difference in the store and hopefully more shoppable. As you can see here, as we

02:17come up to checkout, it was very congested. So we've had to be very careful with our secondary

02:22locations for our sales opportunities. And we've kept it clear so there's not that bottleneck

02:28that comes through from the aisles to the checkout to make it easily accessible for

02:33our customers.
