00:00A hotel extension in Manchester, a major regeneration project in Grimsby, and details of a busy

00:05time at Birmingham Airport all feature in today's Business Briefing.

00:09Morning, Adam.

00:11Morning, Dan.

00:13So, you've got some news from a hotel not too far from here.

00:19Yeah, big property news for Manchester.

00:21Plans for the extension of a hotel in the Deansgate Conservation Area look set to move

00:27forward later this week.

00:29KE Hotels is seeking permission to add three storeys and 54 additional rooms to its Moxie

00:35Hotel, which is located close to Deansgate and near the Manchester Opera House, so a

00:41prominent location in the city centre.

00:43The hotel originally opened its doors in December 2021, transforming a former hat factory in

00:48the city's Spinning Fields district.

00:50Currently the site has 146 rooms, and if approved later this week by the Council's Planning

00:56Committee, the project is expected to create more than 100 jobs during its construction

01:00phase.

01:01Well, that'll be quite interesting to see if those plans go ahead, it's a really nice

01:03area as well.

01:04Yeah, definitely, yeah.

01:05So, sort of sticking with the idea of redevelopment, there has been a development in Grimsby.

01:13GMI Construction Group has started work on a major regeneration project.

01:17Freshly Place is set to be transformed into a retail market and food hub.

01:23The investment, which has been backed by the Government and North East Lincolnshire

01:26Council, aims to revitalise the shopping area in the heart of the port town to secure its

01:30long-term economic future.

01:32GMI will construct a modern market hall with internal upgrades and a new five-screen cinema

01:38with an adjacent leisure facility.

01:39It will also deliver three commercial units designed for food and beverage operators,

01:45a newly designed public square, as well as the refurbishment of three existing retail

01:49units.

01:51The initial phase actually involves internal strip-out, followed by the demolition in the

01:55summer of the existing market hall and roofed-top car park, and there'll also be a partial demolition

02:01of the former BH store and several other commercial units, so there'll be a lot of deconstruction

02:05to do before they can move on with the development.

02:08Freshly Place actually supports about 1,700 local jobs, so this is quite an important

02:13scheme for the future of the area.

02:15Definitely, and I'm sure Insider will be keeping track of how the development progresses

02:18as work continues.

02:19Yeah, definitely.

02:20Anyway, moving on, you've got some news from Birmingham Airport.

02:23Yeah, travel news.

02:24As parents will know, we're in half-term now.

02:26Birmingham Airport have actually said they've been preparing for the busiest February half-term

02:32on their record books.

02:34Yeah, the airport has said the number of passengers is expected to be up by 20% on a similar period

02:42last year.

02:43Now, more than 345,000 customers are expected to travel through the airport before Sunday.

02:50Any ideas on popular destinations where they might be flying to, Dan?

02:54I'll give you a couple of guesses.

02:55I'd probably say Paris and maybe Prague, because I flew to Prague from Birmingham Airport last year.

02:59Yeah, the airport did mention Paris.

03:01It also mentioned Amsterdam, Tenerife for a bit of sun, as well as Dubai, and they're

03:07among the most popular destinations, but the most popular for domestic travel is Belfast,

03:12so a busy week for Birmingham Airport.

03:14No surprises there.

03:15No, definitely.

03:16Just to finish off, we've got some news from Port Talbot.

03:19There's been major development in steel giant Tata's plans for an electric arc furnace-based

03:23steelmaking facility at its Port Talbot site, because its hybrid application has now been

03:28recommended for approval.

03:30Tata Steel lodged the application in November, seeking planning permission for the demolition

03:35of existing buildings and the construction of a new electric furnace-based steel production

03:39facility, which includes one arc furnace and two ladle furnaces.

03:45Also included are new and amended road and rail lines, landscaping, green infrastructure,

03:50lighting, and CCTV.

03:52The planning committee will consider the application on 18th of February, so it'll be interesting

03:57to see if those plans go ahead.

03:58I know it's been going on for quite a while, so it'll be interesting to see what the conclusion is.

04:02Keeping an eye on for the result, yeah.
