California soaked in drenching rain and heavy snow

AccuWeather California Expert Ken Clark analyzes the heavy rain and snow that's barreling over the Golden State as of Feb. 13, which could lead to road closures, flooding and landslides.

00:00Ken, as we talked about, the rain would first come in the central and northern California,

00:06it is now beginning to shift south, but what a stormy morning we had in San Francisco.

00:13Lots of wind, lots of heavy rain, and more rain is to come out there. They're not going to be

00:17done once the front moves through. Concerned about thunderstorms and additional showers

00:22as we go through the afternoon, hours into the early evening. There's even a slight risk of

00:28some severe weather in parts of central California, and that we could be even talking about a brief

00:33funnel cloud or tornado, because there is some turning of the atmosphere, of the wind,

00:38the atmosphere. So we're not done with the rain there, but southern California, that's the next

00:44really on track here for mid to late afternoon and evening hours, this heavy band of rain moving

00:49through with the cold front, three to five hour period of moderate to heavy rain, and we're

00:54looking at a high risk, a high risk of life-threatening debris flows and mudslides in and near

01:01the recent burn areas. There's that rain band now, Future Radar, about three o'clock through Ventura

01:07County, about ready to get in to Los Angeles County, and you know, Ken, we've been talking

01:12about a half that rain amounts in that area, about a half inch to an inch of rain per hour,

01:17certainly possible, and when you do the math, that rain band's about what, about two to three hours

01:24or so as it shifts southward? It should be two to three, three to four, something like that,

01:29and you know, we're looking at, you know, like I said, high degree risk of mudslides and debris

01:36flows because of that rain coming down so hard, and it's going to be the absolute miserable commute

01:41this evening across LA. It's bad usually. This is going to be a horrendous commute because of the

01:47rain coming down. And of course, Ken, really quickly, snow, yeah, it's going to snow hard

01:54really quickly here, and I want to end with this, Ken, you brought this to my attention as well.

02:00Surf. This is a huge storm that developed out in the Pacific and moving inland,

02:05lots of wind with it, and that means there's going to be lots of waves, 20-foot breakers,

02:09very, very likely along the central coast from north to the Bay Area on southward,

02:14and we're looking at maybe some breakers in the 30 to 45 feet.
