00:00The Home Ministry has banned three books under the Printing Presses and Publications Act

00:061984 after stating that they contain elements which could cause moral harm.

00:13The books are My Shadow is Purple by Scott Stewart, Koleksi Puisi Masturbasi by Amir

00:19Hamzah Akal Ali aka Benz Ali, and All That's Left in the World by Eric J. Brown.

00:26In a statement, the Ministry said the bans were gazetted on January 21st and 22nd under

00:31Section 7 Sub 1 of Act 301 as these were undesirable publications.

00:39The Ministry said the government remains committed to implementing regulatory and enforcement

00:43measures to prevent the spread of ideologies that conflict with the culture and values

00:49of Malaysia's diverse society.

00:52Anyone found printing, importing, selling, or publishing the books can be charged under

00:57Section 8 Sub 2 of the Act and face up to three years in prison, a maximum RM20,000

01:03fine or both upon conviction.

01:06In 2023, Amir complained that Home Ministry officials had seized two books from his bookshop

01:12in Kuala Lumpur, although they were not on the banned list.

01:17He said one of the books was Koleksi Puisi Masturbasi, a copy of his poetry collection.

01:23My Shadow is Purple is a children's book which explores themes of individuality, self-expression,

01:30and gender identity, while All That's Left in the World is a post-apocalyptic story which

01:35contains queer elements.
