00:00A former assemblyman has called for Religious Affairs Minister Naeem Mokhtar to be replaced
00:06following criticism over proposed guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim events.
00:12Former DAP leader Ronny Liu also referred to the outcry over a proposal to mandate halal
00:17certification for certain food businesses and the Mufti Bill 2024, which faced opposition
00:23from civil society groups and Perlis Mufti Azri Zainul Abidin.
00:29In a Facebook post, he said Naeem failed to understand Malaysia's multiracial society
00:33and was an example of someone being promoted to a position beyond his ability.
00:38Naeem said yesterday that new guidelines were in the works to set out clear rules regarding
00:43the involvement of Muslims in non-Muslim festivities and funerals, as well as events held at non-Muslim
00:49houses of worship.
00:51Under the proposed rules, there can be no speeches or songs with religious propaganda
00:55or performances that would insult Muslims, while the premises cannot display the religious
01:00symbols of faiths other than Islam.
01:02MIC urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to intervene, while Bangi MP Shahrukh Zain Johan
01:08said the guidelines would impact Muslim elected representatives attending events at non-Muslim
01:13places of worship.
01:15However, Naeem said the guidelines were drawn up with noble intentions and were merely advisory
01:20in nature.
