Prime Minister inspects flood damage in North Queensland as clean-up efforts continue

The Prime Minister is in North Queensland today to inspect flood damage as the clean-up effort continues. Some areas have recorded nearly two metres of rain in the past week, cutting off major roads, including the Bruce Highway.

00:00I'm here on Ninth Avenue here in Townsville where locals have copped another drenching

00:07of rain this morning.

00:09It was blue skies for the most part yesterday in Townsville, if you can believe, but more

00:14heavy downpours on this already very damp ground have led to flash flooding like the

00:19kind you can see behind me here.

00:22It's just a reminder that we're certainly not out of the woods yet when it comes to

00:26this weather event across North Queensland.

00:30Now the Bureau of Meteorology have warned that thunderstorms will bring about heavy

00:34rainfall on other parts of the state like further south of us here in Townsville in

00:40areas like Bowen, for example.

00:42But back in Townsville, locals who were told to evacuate on this street but have just narrowly

00:48avoided being inundated with water are out taking a walk and taking stock of the impact

00:53on their community.

00:55After the last cycling, you know, it was a lot higher.

01:00And the last one I suppose we had about five years ago, we had about two and a half foot

01:06or something under our house, but as I said, you just put things up and be prepared, you

01:12know.

01:13We built a high block home because we knew we were in the flood area.

01:17And we had no water this year under the house.

01:21So while we wait for this stubborn weather system to pass us by, locals here in North

01:26Queensland who have been impacted by the floods are doing what they do best, they're rolling

01:31up their sleeves and they're getting underway with those recovery efforts where they can

01:35of course when there's a break in these persistent downfalls.
