This January was the coldest since 2011

January of 2025 was record-breaking in terms of low temperatures and snow across the continental U.S., while Alaska recorded one of its warmest Januarys ever.

00:00Now that we're one week into February, looking back at the month of January, it was record-breaking

00:06cold across the majority of the country.

00:09In fact, January 2025 was the coldest January since at least 2011.

00:14And these temperature records, they date back to the 1890s.

00:19In fact, of the cities that were surveyed, 166 out of 191, that's 87% of these cities

00:26were below those temperatures.

00:28And the majority of the cities were east of the Rockies, especially the southeast because

00:31of all that snowfall we had.

00:33So if you look at the temperatures as far as the departure from average and normal for

00:37some of these cities, it extends from Kansas, Georgia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Florida,

00:42Ohio, dozens and dozens of states had below average temperatures there.

00:48And as far as the snowfall totals, every single one of these cities you see right there, this

00:52was on January 21st.

00:54Every single one of those cities set daily, all-time daily snowfall records there on that

00:59snowfall you're seeing on the right-hand side of your screen.

01:02And for the record-breaking cold, Kansas, Wyoming, and West Virginia, every single city

01:06surveyed in those states were at least seven degrees below normal, while Alaska was actually

01:11the warmest with all their cities at least 9.7 degrees above normal here for January

01:182021.

01:19In fact, Parkersburg, West Virginia, and Bluefield, West Virginia, both were in the top five

01:24coldest all-time Januaries as far as cities go.

01:28So that's just the contrast.

01:30But whenever you compare Parkersburg, which was the coldest compared to normal, to Fairbanks,

01:34Fairbanks actually ranked in the top ten as far as warmest ever.

01:38So yes, we had the record-breaking coldest January since 2011, and now we're going to

01:43be tracking to see how we rebound heading into February.
