Looking back on the warmest winter recorded in the Upper Midwest

The 2023-2024 winter was the warmest ever recorded in Chicago and Minneapolis, but will 2024-2025 be similar?

00:00If you look back at last winter,

00:02a lot of us in the north central states

00:04would say what winter it was just so warm.

00:08On average,

00:08we were running around 6 to 10 degrees

00:10above where we typically sit when we

00:13look at our historical average and

00:14this goes from December of 2023

00:16through February of 2024 and a lot

00:18of cities included in this orange

00:20zone from Thunder Bay, Minneapolis,

00:22Green Bay, Chicago.

00:23It was a pretty warm winter and it

00:25was hard to get those cold shots of

00:28air and with those cold shots of air.

00:31Some wintry precipitation as well

00:32and it was the warmest on record.

00:35We do come in at number one in a lot

00:38of these areas. Green Bay, Chicago,

00:40Des Moines, Minneapolis, Fargo.

00:41Number one for the warmest winter on record.

00:44This goes from 2023 to 2024.

00:46Those winter rankings and in areas

00:49like Chicago, Minneapolis, Fargo,

00:50Saint Louis, Des Moines.

00:52Felt more like a normal February

00:54and areas like New York City,

00:56February and areas like Louisville,

00:58Kansas City, Indianapolis,

00:59even Fayetteville here in Arkansas.

01:01Historically, though,

01:02when we look at that first average rainfall,

01:04we start to see some of that snow

01:07pushing in through the fall,

01:09at least when it comes to the

01:11northern tier of the country.

01:12And then of course,

01:14as you get further South,

01:15that's when we're heading into

01:17late November into December,

01:18and we're already forecasting

01:20for some snow in these areas.

01:22A welcome sight,

01:23especially when you compare it to last year.

01:26And if we look ahead to this ski season 2024-2025,

01:30it's looking pretty good.

01:31If you're maybe in the upper Midwest,

01:33the Great Lakes area from Minneapolis,

01:35even through Green Bay,

01:37and that goes for the UP and the Mitten as well.

01:39It is going to be a cooler season

01:42that of course will help support some of that snow.

01:46Of course, we'll just have to see here.
