00:00A government MP has expressed concern about the proposed guidelines for Muslims attending
00:06non-Muslim events, which would require organisers to obtain the permission of religious authorities
00:13before inviting Muslims to attend.
00:15Bangi MP Syarizan Johan said the guidelines would affect Muslim elected representatives
00:21invited to events at non-Muslim houses of worship.
00:25In a post, he said Muslim elected representatives who attend these events are not there for
00:30worship but to carry out their duties and responsibilities to their constituents.
00:35Syarizan said some MPs have requested to meet with Religious Affairs Minister Naeem Mokhtar
00:40to clarify the guidelines and provide their input.
00:44In a written Dewan Rakyat reply, Naeem said new guidelines were in the works to set out
00:48clear rules regarding the involvement of Muslims in non-Muslim houses of worship.
00:54Under the proposed rules, there can be no speeches or songs with religious propaganda
00:59or performances that would insult Muslims, while the premises cannot display symbols
01:03of religion other than Islam.
01:05Naeem said the guidelines will be finalised when the Muzakarah Committee of the National
01:10Council for Islamic Religious Affairs meets from February 25 to 27.
