00:00Artificial intelligence programs are growing smarter and increasingly integrated into our way of life.
00:08The European Union wants to wise up to the challenges it presents.
00:12Under the EU's AI Act, some applications, like public biometric identification, will be subject to strict requirements.
00:20Failure to comply could result in fines of up to 7% of annual turnover.
00:26These AI systems, they can still be put on the market,
00:30but the makers need to make sure that their systems comply with some requirements that are in the Act.
00:37And they need to either self-certify or get a third party to certify that they are in compliance with the Act.
00:46The AI Act was adopted back in 2024, but the majority of its rules won't kick in until August 2026.
00:53The EU aims to protect people's rights while supporting an environment for innovation.
00:58An estimated 13.5% of the EU's businesses are currently using AI.
01:05That's about one in seven.
01:08EU officials say that needs to change if the bloc wants to remain competitive on the world stage.
01:15The bloc is seeking to take action and help companies bridge the technological gap.
01:20This year we will therefore launch a broad AI strategy for our continent.
01:25It will include an applied AI initiative to drive industrial adoption of artificial intelligence in key sectors.
01:33The recent attention around Chinese AI firm DeepSeek's new model has increased scrutiny on the sector.
01:39Rules to ensure greater safety and transparency for general purpose AI tools are set to come into effect in a few months' time.
01:46The AI office is indeed the responsible body for the supervision of these market developments when it comes to advanced AI models, including DeepSeek potentially.
01:57But these rules will only kick in in August of 2025, so later this year.
02:02Advances in AI are moving fast.
02:05The challenges for the EU is establishing guardrails while not pulling the plug on a technology with so much potential.
