00:00Imagine you're at work. Cameras are everywhere, tracking your movements, your habits, even your facial expressions.

00:11The data feeds into an algorithm, giving your employer information about the way you think and feel.

00:18Experts say AI tools could develop the power to recognize and interpret our emotions.

00:24These tools would then have a deeply personal picture of us all.

00:29And that's why the European Union is stepping in.

00:32The Artificial Intelligence Act will ban tools that analyze emotions in workplaces or schools, but it won't stop there.

00:40Lawmakers are also worried governments will build vast profiles of citizens.

00:45This could allow authorities to use data as a weapon, for example, cutting off services to people who criticize them.

00:52The new laws are designed to prevent that.

00:55They'll also deal with so-called predictive policing.

00:58AI can help forecast criminal activity.

01:01Those forecasts might prevent crime, but activists say the algorithm will use historical criminal records,

01:08meaning it'll look for crime where police usually look for crime.

01:13That means it could reinforce racial and social bias.

01:17The new rules are supposed to limit predictive policing.

01:21They'll allow police to use AI in some situations, like searching for a missing person or stopping a terror attack.

01:29But even then, they'll have to follow strict guidelines.

01:33These laws take effect in six months, and EU states will have to be ready,

01:38because the intelligence may be artificial, but the threat is real.
