It's almost always time to eat. The food business is more resistant to crises, but has lower profit margins. Flechtorfer Mühle is a longstanding family-owned company that's going in new directions. It may be small, but it's thinking of big ways to attract customers. The Flechtorf Mill near Wolfsburg grinds 650 tons of wheat and rye every day. The flour heads for discounters in Germany, the Benelux countries and Scandinavia. There's hardly a supermarket product that's cheaper than flour. The Thönebe family, which has been running the mill for three generations,is therefore investing in new products, like waffle batter in bottles. The baking mixes and processed products bring in a third of the company's 80 million euro revenue. With their staff of 100,the father and son team wants to take on the big food makers,at least in some segments. Marion Hütter.
