Does accent prejudice exist in the UK?

A study shows people with ‘posh’ accents are less likely to be found guilty by a jury. We ask Birmingham residents if they think accents affect how people are perceived and if there’s prejudice against their local accent.

00:00I do think I everybody is prejudiced to a certain extent and accents are one of

00:06the big first the first time you hear someone speak and how they come across

00:09and what they say a big part of it has to do with how they talk and what accent

00:13they're from so you know a scouser is talking about you know politics and

00:19you're like this is a lot coming from this voice. I think unconscious bias is a

00:25particularly big issue and posh accents are just one of a number of different

00:29factors there's all all different things. I think everyone makes judgments about

00:35everyone almost instantly without even thinking about it they shouldn't but we

00:40all do it's like it built in yeah I think the important part is being able

00:44to then question that judgment that you make about a person where's that coming

00:47from is that problematic is that rooted in you know whatever how do we address

00:51that yeah but I think judgments are yeah inevitable yeah
