Roy Campbell and Patricia Campbell.
00:07
How you doing guys, you okay? Yes we're fine, thank you.
00:09
So we join you on a special time in your life, you're celebrating Diamond Wedding.
00:16
That's right, 60 years. 60 years, yeah, yeah.
00:19
I can't believe it, can you?
00:21
Has it flown by? It has, yeah.
00:24
So where were you married at?
00:27
St Michael's Church, Maryhill.
00:29
Maryhill, I'm just trying to think, I'm not sure.
00:32
Is it still there?
00:33
Yes, it's still there but it's a big church now.
00:36
We were married in the, what's the church hall now?
00:40
Okay, yeah, yeah, so it's changed a bit.
00:42
Yes, that's the church now.
00:44
What's your, how did you meet them? We had a little chat off camera.
00:48
You both worked in Wolverhampton, didn't you?
00:50
Yes, I worked, I was a butcher in St John's Street.
00:54
Yeah.
00:55
And Patty was, but four shops up, she was selling, it used to be called Scots.
01:02
Yeah.
01:03
Scots.
01:04
Separates and ladies' underwear.
01:06
Yeah.
01:07
We were the first shop in Wolverhampton to have coloured underwear.
01:11
Were you?
01:12
Yeah.
01:13
How about that?
01:14
Wow, you don't even think, you just take it for granted, don't you?
01:16
Yeah.
01:17
Wow.
01:18
So go on, so how did you meet?
01:20
What were you doing hanging around a ladies' underwear shop?
01:24
Well, the lady who works with me, she kept sending me up for whatever, like some nylons or whatever.
01:33
Yeah.
01:34
And we got to know each other like that.
01:36
Yeah.
01:37
And I asked her out one night.
01:39
Yeah.
01:40
Went to the pictures.
01:42
I was going to say, yeah, so where did you go? Went to the pictures on your first date?
01:45
Yes.
01:46
Yeah.
01:47
I think so.
01:48
Can you remember what you saw?
01:50
Oh.
01:51
Not me.
01:52
No.
01:53
No.
01:54
No.
01:55
Too busy kissing in the back row.
01:56
No, no, no.
01:57
No, no, no.
01:58
We wasn't that close.
01:59
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:00
We was holding hands.
02:01
Yeah.
02:02
And that's it.
02:03
Ah, that's sweet.
02:04
So back in those days, dating, so there was the cinema.
02:08
And then was it kind of the time where, you know, you'd get to look at a dance as well, a tea dance-y kind of place?
02:14
I did.
02:15
Yeah?
02:16
I loved dancing.
02:17
I used to go with my best friend to the Queen's.
02:19
Oh, the Queen's Ballroom.
02:20
Yeah, yeah.
02:21
Well, have any of you ever seen pictures of that?
02:23
It looked magnificent.
02:24
It was wonderful.
02:25
Yeah.
02:26
Yeah.
02:27
So you must have been very sad when that disappeared then.
02:29
Oh, it was terrible.
02:30
The roof came in.
02:31
Oh, is that what happened?
02:32
Yeah.
02:33
Ah, OK.
02:34
Yeah.
02:35
And what about Roy?
02:36
Could he dance?
02:37
Not really.
02:38
No.
02:39
My friend helped teach in a dancing school.
02:45
Yeah.
02:46
So I started to go there.
02:47
You only came once, didn't you?
02:49
You won a medal at dancing, didn't you?
02:51
Yes, I did.
02:52
Oh, wow.
02:53
Bronze medal for Latin American.
02:54
Wow.
02:55
OK.
02:56
Yeah, yeah.
02:57
Good stuff.
02:58
So you were dating for a while.
03:00
Love blossomed.
03:01
Yes.
03:02
That's it.
03:03
Yes.
03:04
Do you remember?
03:05
I'm presuming you proposed, Roy.
03:06
Yeah?
03:07
It's normally in the man, isn't it?
03:09
Was it you?
03:10
I don't think so.
03:11
No, it was his mum who said it was time you two got married.
03:14
Oh, was it?
03:15
Yeah.
03:16
Yeah.
03:17
Yes.
03:18
Yeah, yeah.
03:19
That's when we got engaged, wasn't it?
03:21
Yeah.
03:22
So did you manage to get a honeymoon when you were married?
03:24
Yes, we went to Sussex Gardens.
03:26
Wow.
03:27
In London.
03:28
Yeah.
03:29
Interesting.
03:30
Yeah.
03:31
It was only for about three or four days.
03:33
Yeah.
03:34
And did you ever go back there over the years?
03:35
No.
03:36
No.
03:37
No.
03:38
That's a shame.
03:39
It was really strange because the next morning she was banging on the door saying it's time
03:42
you were downstairs for breakfast.
03:44
What?
03:45
At the guest house?
03:46
Yeah.
03:47
You know how it is.
03:48
Yeah.
03:49
Banging on the door to tell us to get out.
03:50
Mind you, it was half past nine.
03:51
Yeah, but you know, it's up to you, isn't it?
03:54
If you want to get out for breakfast, you'll get out.
03:56
I don't know.
03:57
Yeah.
03:58
How things have changed.
03:59
I know.
04:00
Too right, too right.
04:01
Yeah.
04:02
So over the years, you've had children, sadly lost your daughter.
04:06
Yeah.
04:07
That was a tough thing for you to go through.
04:09
Yeah.
04:10
But you've got a son.
04:12
Yes.
04:13
Yes, Stephen.
04:14
Yes.
04:15
And a couple of grandkids as well that you've played a part in raising.
04:18
Yeah.
04:19
Where have you enjoyed holidaying over the years?
04:22
Any particular favourite place you've spent time?
04:24
Oh, we've been to Spain a lot.
04:26
Yeah, we used to like Paraguay.
04:28
Okay.
04:29
The Angela Hotel.
04:30
It was lovely.
04:31
Oh, absolutely.
04:32
Lovely hotel.
04:33
We've been to Greece and we've been to Tunisia a lot of times.
04:35
France.
04:36
Yeah.
04:37
Have you done a lot of travelling then?
04:38
Yes.
04:39
Oh, yes.
04:40
Make sure we had a holiday every year.
04:41
Yeah.
04:42
Yeah.
04:44
And people might, who watch this and are from the black country, particularly Wolverhampton,
04:48
Technal way, might think, that chap, he does look a bit familiar.
04:52
Why might they think that, Roy?
04:54
You were a businessman in Tecnal for a number of years.
04:57
Yes, I had the shop for 27 years.
05:00
As a butcher's, weren't it?
05:01
Used to treat me as a landlord.
05:03
Yeah.
05:04
Used to come and tell me all the stories.
05:06
Yeah, all the gossip.
05:07
All the gossip.
05:08
Yeah, yeah.
05:09
And the what?
05:10
You were in the bank as well.
05:12
They just tried to check for me.
05:14
Yeah.
05:15
Oh, yeah.
05:16
Yeah.
05:17
But I miss it, really.
05:18
I miss all the customers.
05:20
Well, that's the thing, isn't it?
05:21
When you work somewhere like that and you've got your regulars, like you say, it's, you
05:25
know, it's a whole social thing, isn't it?
05:28
Yeah, that's right.
05:29
And I become friends.
05:30
Yeah, exactly.
05:31
Yeah, yeah.
05:32
And a few of them used to say, could you put us in the book till the weekend?
05:35
Yeah.
05:36
Used to say, yeah.
05:37
Was it on tick?
05:38
Is that what you say, on tick?
05:39
On tick.
05:40
But when I left, the presence I had.
05:43
Yeah.
05:44
It's amazing.
05:45
Yeah.
05:46
So it was, it was next to the post office and it was called Campbell Butchers.
05:49
Used to be next to the chemist.
05:51
Next to the chemist, yeah.
05:52
Campbell's Butchers.
05:53
Campbell's Butchers.
05:54
You had a few guests.
05:55
We got a, we'll bring up a picture.
05:57
Mr. John Redwood.
05:58
He popped along for a.
05:59
John Redwood.
06:00
Yeah.
06:01
Staged Geoffrey Howe.
06:02
Yeah.
06:03
Michael Heseltine.
06:04
What about the one who's on the TV now?
06:07
He came, didn't he, Michael?
06:09
Portillo.
06:10
That's him.
06:11
Ah, okay.
06:12
Yeah, yeah.
06:13
And you had Rachel Hayo Flint.
06:14
I recognised her on a picture.
06:16
She was nice, wasn't she, Rachel?
06:18
Sadly, no longer with us.
06:19
She did a lot for Ribbage Cricket.
06:20
She did.
06:21
Yeah, yeah.
06:22
And a great ambassador for Wolves and the club.
06:24
That's right.
06:25
And the city, really, you know.
06:26
She worked hard.
06:27
Yeah.
06:28
So what's the secret?
06:29
I mean, I'm a married man.
06:30
I've got a few years to go till I get to my diamond.
06:32
Yeah.
06:33
You know, is there any kind of words of advice you can pass on to a, I was going to say,
06:38
young married couple.
06:39
I'm not young anymore.
06:40
But, you know, to married couples, what's some words of advice for longevity and...
06:45
I would say give and take.
06:48
And tell each other you love them every day.
06:52
Yeah.
06:53
Which we do.
06:54
Yeah.
06:55
We always have done.
06:56
Never take it for granted.
06:57
Always, always, yeah.
06:58
Yeah.
06:59
Always say...
07:00
Never say no.
07:01
Never say no.
07:02
Never say no.
07:07
So how are you going to mark this occasion then?
07:10
Obviously, you were kind of fitting and fiddling up and about.
07:14
Weren't you up until a few years ago?
07:16
And you had a nasty fall.
07:17
Yes.
07:18
So, obviously, that's impacted your mobility massively.
07:21
You've had a lot to contend with.
07:22
That's right.
07:23
I presume, you know, the support of a loving husband comes even more.
07:27
I don't know what I'd do without him.
07:29
Yeah.
07:30
Yeah.
07:31
Yeah.
07:32
It's hard work, but it's his hair still.
07:35
Yeah.
07:36
Well, exactly.
07:37
Yeah, yeah.
07:38
So are you planning on having a couple of guests round,
07:41
or is it just kind of anything at all?
07:44
We've got a couple of men coming round later on.
07:48
Yeah.
07:49
Just for a cup of tea and a chat.
07:50
Stephen's coming tonight.
07:52
And my son's going to bring a takeaway tonight.
07:54
Oh, good.
07:55
What takeaway do you like?
07:57
We like them both.
07:58
Oh, yeah.
07:59
Chinese and Indian?
08:00
Yeah.
08:01
Oh, do you?
08:02
Yeah.
08:03
Well, fair play.
08:05
Chinese and Indian, it was never passing the lips.
08:07
Do you know what I mean?
08:08
Oh, no.
08:09
So you're quite adventurous with your food.
08:10
I bet that's come off the back of all the travelling as well you've done.
08:13
Yes.
08:14
Do you know what I mean?
08:15
Yeah, yeah.
08:16
Well, thank you for inviting us, the Expression of Stardown,
08:19
to kind of celebrate it with you.
08:21
Thank you so much for coming.
08:23
No problem.
08:24
I can sense the warmth and the love between you, which is lovely.
08:27
And I should mention, you've got a special card, haven't you?
08:30
That's right.
08:31
So if anyone gets to their 60th, they'll get a special card off Charles and old Camilla there.
08:37
That's it.
08:38
They'll be popping round for a brew later, I'm sure.
08:42
Well, we wish you all the best, guys, and take care.
08:44
Thank you very much, and thank you for coming.
08:46
It's really kind of you.
