Former Tettenhall butcher and his wife celebrate Diamond Wedding.

The Campbells now live in Wheaton Aston but Mr Campbell for many years ran a Butchers on Tettenhall green. We catch up with them as they mark 60 years of marriage.

00:21Has it flown by? It has, yeah.

00:24So where were you married at?

00:27St Michael's Church, Maryhill.

00:29Maryhill, I'm just trying to think, I'm not sure.

00:32Is it still there?

00:33Yes, it's still there but it's a big church now.

00:36We were married in the, what's the church hall now?

00:40Okay, yeah, yeah, so it's changed a bit.

00:42Yes, that's the church now.

00:44What's your, how did you meet them? We had a little chat off camera.

00:48You both worked in Wolverhampton, didn't you?

00:50Yes, I worked, I was a butcher in St John's Street.

00:54Yeah.

00:55And Patty was, but four shops up, she was selling, it used to be called Scots.

01:02Yeah.

01:03Scots.

01:04Separates and ladies' underwear.

01:06Yeah.

01:07We were the first shop in Wolverhampton to have coloured underwear.

01:11Were you?

01:12Yeah.

01:13How about that?

01:14Wow, you don't even think, you just take it for granted, don't you?

01:16Yeah.

01:17Wow.

01:18So go on, so how did you meet?

01:20What were you doing hanging around a ladies' underwear shop?

01:24Well, the lady who works with me, she kept sending me up for whatever, like some nylons or whatever.

01:33Yeah.

01:34And we got to know each other like that.

01:36Yeah.

01:37And I asked her out one night.

01:39Yeah.

01:40Went to the pictures.

01:42I was going to say, yeah, so where did you go? Went to the pictures on your first date?

01:45Yes.

01:46Yeah.

01:47I think so.

01:48Can you remember what you saw?

01:50Oh.

01:55Too busy kissing in the back row.

01:58We wasn't that close.

02:00We was holding hands.

02:04So back in those days, dating, so there was the cinema.

02:08And then was it kind of the time where, you know, you'd get to look at a dance as well, a tea dance-y kind of place?

02:14I did.

02:16I loved dancing.

02:17I used to go with my best friend to the Queen's.

02:19Oh, the Queen's Ballroom.

02:20Yeah, yeah.

02:21Well, have any of you ever seen pictures of that?

02:23It looked magnificent.

02:24It was wonderful.

02:25Yeah.

02:27So you must have been very sad when that disappeared then.

02:29Oh, it was terrible.

02:30The roof came in.

02:39My friend helped teach in a dancing school.

02:46So I started to go there.

02:47You only came once, didn't you?

02:49You won a medal at dancing, didn't you?

02:51Yes, I did.

02:52Oh, wow.

02:53Bronze medal for Latin American.

02:58So you were dating for a while.

03:00Love blossomed.

03:05I'm presuming you proposed, Roy.

03:06Yeah?

03:07It's normally in the man, isn't it?

03:09Was it you?

03:10I don't think so.

03:11No, it was his mum who said it was time you two got married.

03:19That's when we got engaged, wasn't it?

03:22So did you manage to get a honeymoon when you were married?

03:24Yes, we went to Sussex Gardens.

03:31It was only for about three or four days.

03:34And did you ever go back there over the years?

03:35No.

03:39It was really strange because the next morning she was banging on the door saying it's time

03:42you were downstairs for breakfast.

03:45At the guest house?

03:46Yeah.

03:47You know how it is.

03:49Banging on the door to tell us to get out.

03:50Mind you, it was half past nine.

03:51Yeah, but you know, it's up to you, isn't it?

03:54If you want to get out for breakfast, you'll get out.

03:56I don't know.

03:58How things have changed.

04:01Yeah.

04:02So over the years, you've had children, sadly lost your daughter.

04:06Yeah.

04:07That was a tough thing for you to go through.

04:09Yeah.

04:10But you've got a son.

04:12Yes.

04:13Yes, Stephen.

04:15And a couple of grandkids as well that you've played a part in raising.

04:18Yeah.

04:19Where have you enjoyed holidaying over the years?

04:22Any particular favourite place you've spent time?

04:24Oh, we've been to Spain a lot.

04:26Yeah, we used to like Paraguay.

04:28Okay.

04:29The Angela Hotel.

04:30It was lovely.

04:31Oh, absolutely.

04:32Lovely hotel.

04:33We've been to Greece and we've been to Tunisia a lot of times.

04:36Yeah.

04:37Have you done a lot of travelling then?

04:38Yes.

04:39Oh, yes.

04:40Make sure we had a holiday every year.

04:41Yeah.

04:44And people might, who watch this and are from the black country, particularly Wolverhampton,

04:48Technal way, might think, that chap, he does look a bit familiar.

04:52Why might they think that, Roy?

04:54You were a businessman in Tecnal for a number of years.

04:57Yes, I had the shop for 27 years.

05:00As a butcher's, weren't it?

05:01Used to treat me as a landlord.

05:03Yeah.

05:04Used to come and tell me all the stories.

05:06Yeah, all the gossip.

05:07All the gossip.

05:08Yeah, yeah.

05:09And the what?

05:10You were in the bank as well.

05:12They just tried to check for me.

05:14Yeah.

05:15Oh, yeah.

05:16Yeah.

05:17But I miss it, really.

05:18I miss all the customers.

05:20Well, that's the thing, isn't it?

05:21When you work somewhere like that and you've got your regulars, like you say, it's, you

05:25know, it's a whole social thing, isn't it?

05:28Yeah, that's right.

05:29And I become friends.

05:30Yeah, exactly.

05:31Yeah, yeah.

05:32And a few of them used to say, could you put us in the book till the weekend?

05:35Yeah.

05:36Used to say, yeah.

05:37Was it on tick?

05:40But when I left, the presence I had.

05:44It's amazing.

05:46So it was, it was next to the post office and it was called Campbell Butchers.

06:13And you had Rachel Hayo Flint.

06:14I recognised her on a picture.

06:16She was nice, wasn't she, Rachel?

06:18Sadly, no longer with us.

06:19She did a lot for Ribbage Cricket.

06:22And a great ambassador for Wolves and the club.

06:24That's right.

06:25And the city, really, you know.

06:26She worked hard.

06:27Yeah.

06:28So what's the secret?

06:29I mean, I'm a married man.

06:30I've got a few years to go till I get to my diamond.

06:33You know, is there any kind of words of advice you can pass on to a, I was going to say,

06:38young married couple.

06:39I'm not young anymore.

06:40But, you know, to married couples, what's some words of advice for longevity and...

06:45I would say give and take.

06:48And tell each other you love them every day.

06:52Yeah.

06:53Which we do.

06:54Yeah.

06:55We always have done.

06:56Never take it for granted.

06:57Always, always, yeah.

07:07So how are you going to mark this occasion then?

07:10Obviously, you were kind of fitting and fiddling up and about.

07:14Weren't you up until a few years ago?

07:16And you had a nasty fall.

07:17Yes.

07:18So, obviously, that's impacted your mobility massively.

07:21You've had a lot to contend with.

07:22That's right.

07:23I presume, you know, the support of a loving husband comes even more.

07:27I don't know what I'd do without him.

07:29Yeah.

07:32It's hard work, but it's his hair still.

07:38So are you planning on having a couple of guests round,

07:41or is it just kind of anything at all?

07:44We've got a couple of men coming round later on.
