00:00There was a time when district Kulgam was known as the rice bowl of Kashmir.

00:04People started focusing on agriculture and horticulture.

00:11I would like to tell you that most of the population of district Kulgam, especially in Coimbatore,

00:17have set up nurseries and have left traditional fruit plants and are now focusing on foreign varieties like Gala.

00:31These people are now in the market and the foreign varieties are providing their roots and plants.

00:38The advantage of this is that the dependency will also end and fortunately, the standard rates in the market will also increase.

00:51We will talk to the people here who are associated with this and would like to know more from them.

01:00The rice has shifted from rice to apple.

01:04Everyone is looking for the benefits.

01:07As you know, the apple industry is one of the biggest industries in Kashmir.

01:18We felt that there is more profit in this as compared to rice.

01:22That is why we have shifted from rice to apple.

01:25Now that new technologies and varieties have come in this, farmers and nursery owners are getting a lot of benefits.

01:38That is why people are going after new varieties because new varieties come every year and there is a lot of profit in it.

01:47This is a revolution of high density.

01:51We have imported high density from abroad.

01:55The people who saw that there is more profit in this and there is less hard work and it comes on fruiting quickly.

02:03Immediately, people shifted from traditional orchards to new high density orchards.

02:15They get investment and profit within 2-3 years.

02:19This year, the varieties that are selling the most are Tirekis and Shiniko Red.

02:27Then we have Mema Gala, Dark Baron Gala, Fensum Gala.

02:33Among the delicious varieties, we have SS2, SS3, Z1.

02:38We also had RD11 which has already been sold.

02:42Apart from apples, there was a lot of demand for cherries this year.

02:49High density cherries are available on rootstocks, particularly on cold rootstocks.

02:55The varieties that are available on cold rootstocks are Stella and Diamond.

03:06If no effort is made to import the roots or to plant the imported plants,

03:13locally grafted plants and rootstocks can be planted here.

03:20This is a very big industry and it is emerging.

03:24Right now, in Kulgam, there is 100 crore rupees in this industry.

03:30Two years ago, when we brought the roots from Italy, we cultivated them here.

03:38We have made the plants here.

03:40It is not expensive compared to Italy.

03:41It is 200 rupees cheaper than Italy.

03:44If the price of an Italian plant is 800-870 rupees,

03:47we will get it for 400-370-330 rupees.

03:51People don't have to go out.

03:53We have available plant material.

03:55Anyone can use it.

03:56It is expensive there and cheaper here.

03:59Kulgam was known as the rice bowl of Jammu and Kashmir.
