00:00Bersatu must move away from UMNO's shadow and return to the principles on which it was
00:06founded to ensure its longevity, say analysts.
00:10University Malaya's Taufik Yaakob said the party should no longer appoint former UMNO
00:15leaders to leadership positions in the party.
00:19Taufik was referring to Bersatu's new Supreme Council lineup, announced last Saturday, which
00:25included former UMNO leader Noh Omar.
00:29He said Bersatu needs to stop appointing former UMNO leaders or risk being labelled a party
00:34of UMNO runaways and irrelevant party leaders.
00:39It would also cause discontent among Bersatu's pioneer members as elected representatives
00:45and party leaders shifted their support and left the party.
00:49Meanwhile, National Professors' Council fellow Azmi Hassan said Bersatu's continued appointment
00:55of former UMNO leaders highlighted the lack of depth within its ranks.
01:01He said Bersatu had taken a shortcut by appointing well-known politicians, even though some among
01:07them had been embroiled in controversy while with UMNO.
