00:00
So today we're making a major announcement on our journey to becoming net zero by 2040,
00:10
which is all about delivering to customers using zero tailpipe emission deliveries.
00:16
So there's three elements to the announcement that we're making today.
00:19
The first one is that we've made a record breaking order for electric trucks that will
00:25
join our fleet this year in the UK.
00:27
The second piece is about how we're now moving products from Scotland down to the East Midlands
00:33
using the rail network.
00:35
And the third part of the announcement is about how we're using Walker deliveries across
00:40
the UK as part of our multimodal sustainable delivery network to be more sustainable.
00:48
So this is the largest ever order that's been placed for electric HGVs in the UK and once
00:54
that fleet hits the road, it's going to be able to move over 300 million packages around
00:59
our UK transportation network.
01:02
We've also invested in the charging infrastructure across our sites to be able to support them.
01:07
So we're really proud of the partnership that we're doing here with Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.
01:13
The reason that we're partnering with them is these trucks will have a range of over
01:17
310 miles, which suits our transportation network, but also the ease of charge.
01:22
We're able to charge up to 80% of the battery in just over an hour.
01:28
So we're going to use the UK rail network to be able to move products down to the Midlands
01:34
from Scotland.
01:35
So the West Coast mainline is fully electric, so by using that, it's moving freight transport
01:42
off of the roads and onto rail, and that will allow us to be able to move about 20 million
01:48
products per year using that method.
01:51
So we're now doing walker deliveries in London.
01:53
So along with our electric bike and our electric van deliveries, now allows us to cover up
01:58
to 70% of the central congestion zone with these zero emission deliveries.
02:05
So we have our walker deliveries that will typically be out in pedestrianised zones.
02:09
Now it's a walker delivery team that are pushing trolleys and now what we're doing is we're
02:16
finding a way to go out whilst the delivery team are out on road to replenish those trolleys
02:22
so that we replenish as they go.
02:24
So within London, the walker deliveries with the electric vans and with the electric bikes
02:29
has now allowed us to convert over half a million delivery routes to zero emission deliveries.
02:36
And what this means is since 2022, we've been able to deliver over 150 million packages
02:42
via zero emission deliveries.
02:45
So the logistics industry faces a momentous challenge trying to get to net zero by 2050.
02:50
But the exciting thing about today's announcement is moves to help reduce those emissions.
02:56
So moving to electric HGVs, moving more goods by rail and also walking deliveries.
03:01
All of those are going to help reduce emissions and also spread the word that there are ways
03:06
in which the sector can be reducing emissions today.
03:10
So in the UK, there are about half a million trucks used for logistics operations and without
03:15
them, goods can't move.
03:17
But we do need to move to alternative fuels to get to net zero.
03:21
So it is great to see such a significant order of electric trucks being made.
03:26
In total, there are less than 1% of HGVs that are electric.
03:30
So this is a significant order and other operators out there can look to companies like Amazon
03:36
to see what they're doing and learn and help the sector to look to the future.
03:41
Rail freight is a really important mode of logistics transport and Logistics UK has
03:46
been calling for more goods to be moved by rail.
03:49
So it's great to see one of our members announcing that they will be doing exactly that.
03:55
Logistics UK is really excited to see the announcement of more on-foot deliveries by
03:59
Amazon.
04:00
We're really excited to see more innovation in the sector and looking at ways to reduce
04:05
emissions and congestion in busy city centres and urban areas where this type of initiative
04:11
is possible.
04:12
So Logistics UK's members do have concerns about the right technologies, the right ways
04:18
in which they should be reducing emissions.
04:20
And it is great to see a company like Amazon being one of the first adopters because that
04:25
helps our other members see what's happening and have more confidence in what they may
04:30
be able to adopt in the future when it's viable for their business.
