COLLEGE BASKETBALL FINAL: SMU Dominates Georgia Tech 93-71 in First ACC Showdown Since 1986

SMU overwhelmed Georgia Tech in their first meeting as ACC opponents, earning a dominant 93-71 victory in the 15th overall matchup between the two teams. The Mustangs bounced back from consecutive losses to Duke and North Carolina.

The teams had not faced each other since Dec. 21, 1986, in Tokyo, Japan.

Georgia Tech entered the week riding a three-game winning streak, during which they shot 56.3% from the field. However, they struggled in Tuesday’s 62-55 loss to Syracuse, missing 42 shots. The offensive struggles carried over to the matchup with SMU, as the Yellow Jackets registered 22 turnovers.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs’ offense was firing on all cylinders, with five players scoring in double figures. Chuck Harris, B.J. Edwards, Yohan Traore, Kario Oquendo, and Matt Cross all contributed 10 or more points.

Harris, who had seen reduced playing time this season, showed flashes of his past dominance. The guard, a standout last year, finished with 21 points, 2 assists, and 3 rebounds.

SMU will next hit the road to face the University of Virginia on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
