LOCATION OF MISSING RIG WORKER

Well Services believes it has identified the location of its worker Pete Phillip who went missing when its offshore rig collapsed in December.    However it says the search for Phillip has been temporarily suspended to undertake a few operational procedures to ensure the safety of those engaged in the recovery effort.    Alicia Boucher has the details.

00:00Pete Phillip, a worker on rig 110, has been missing since a part of the structure collapsed

00:05on December 22nd.

00:07Since then, operations have been underway to locate the missing man in a search that

00:12moved from rescue to recovery.

00:15While for the second time, the recovery operations have been temporarily suspended.

00:20This time, the owner of the rig, Wells Services, says it has been done to secure specialized

00:25equipment including a heavy lift barge and crane barges, etc., in order to be able to

00:31move forward safely amid inherent risks associated with a recovery operation.

00:37The company adds that formulation of a comprehensive safety plan is underway and will be subsequently

00:43submitted to the Occupational Safety and Health Agency before the search is resumed.

00:49It states that a current phase presents a number of challenges requiring a tailored

00:53approach including rigorous safety assessments, logistical coordination, and adherence to

00:59established protocols to ensure the well-being of everyone involved.

01:05Wells Services says, quote, In discussions with the family, we have communicated that

01:09we believe we have identified the location of Mr. Pete Phillip.

01:14However, to safely reach that location, it is imperative that the rig is first stabilized

01:20to mitigate any further risks.

01:23Failure to do so will further jeopardize the safety of other personnel involved.

01:27We remain committed to carrying out this process with the utmost attention to safety and efficiency.

01:35The company underscores that while actions are being taken to expedite the process, precision

01:40must be taken in each phase of the efforts that are carried out as the main focus at

01:46this time is the safety of the recovery team and all personnel on site.

01:51Wells Services says, quote, We recognize that the length of this process has caused

01:55frustration and concern among Mr. Phillip's family members and we share in their distress.

02:08On December 31st, the search was temporarily suspended to allow the site to be assessed

02:13and secured.

02:15Wells Services has given a commitment to working as swiftly as possible to recover the missing

02:21employee.
