Sydney's Bronte beach trashed following massive Christmas gathering

The Waverley Council says it will consider taking actions after tens of thousands of people trashed Sydney's Bronte Beach following a massive Christmas party.

00:00At one of Sydney's most pristine beaches, residents woke up to this nightmare.

00:09What we found were piles of cans, bottles and half-eaten Christmas lunches.

00:17This wave of trash, the result of around 15,000 rowdy tourists celebrating an orphan's Christmas

00:26a little too well.

00:29This morning, volunteers and residents pitched in to clean up the mess.

00:34By this afternoon, Bronte was back to its picturesque self.

00:38But locals are frustrated at the state of their normally quiet haven.

00:43They're all really, really upset and disgusted really.

00:48I just don't understand why we can't pick up our rubbish.

00:51Residents are rightfully frustrated that their beach and their park wasn't respected by the

00:58tourists that came here.

00:59Waverley Council insists it took extra measures to prevent this situation happening, including

01:04installing 250 extra bins and paying for extra police officers.

01:09But many are wondering why local ratepayers are the ones being left to foot the bill.

01:15We need help to manage these places and keep it to a standard that is expected.

01:23It's definitely unfair to expect a local council to have to foot the bill for an iconic state-wide

01:29event like Christmas Day at Bronte Beach.

01:31And we definitely ask for more support from the state government.

01:35It's not the first time this has happened.

01:37Last year, thousands flocked to Bronte's golden shores.

01:41And with more set to return next Christmas, the council's message is clear.

01:46Everyone is welcome at our beaches.

01:48We just ask that you respect the environment and clean up after yourself.

01:51A festive celebration leaving a costly trail of trash.
