00:00Hello!
00:02Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the most horrifying movies that scared audiences by plunging them into complete darkness.
00:13I never want to leave you. Ever.
00:19Number 10. Paranormal Activity.
00:22The flowers are not moving, but something else is.
00:27The door is freaking moving by itself.
00:30Oh my god.
00:31This found footage flick made audiences wet their pants and blame loved ones for spilling soda in the theater.
00:37Mika, what are you doing? Why is she here?
00:40Something out there.
00:43When Katie and Mika move into a San Diego pad, a collection of odd events inspire them to set up cameras.
00:49What happens? Well, Katie stares at her sleeping husband for two hours and later gets hurled out of the room.
00:55To make matters worse, the ghosts get all kinky and start biting poor Katie.
00:59What happens next will shock you, and it does involve blood.
01:03You'll wish you could sleep with your eyes open after watching this one.
01:12Number 9. The Babadook.
01:15His name is Mr. Babadook, and this is his book.
01:19Have you ever heard the story of the Babadook?
01:21Well, neither had this troubled single mother, and upon reading the cursed book to her son,
01:26she unleashed its hellish torment on both their lives.
01:29The son's overactive imagination leads the mother to initially disbelieve the Babadook exists.
01:34However, she believes its incessant stalking causes the family to experience increasing psychological trauma.
01:40One cannot escape the Babadook once a person becomes aware of his existence.
01:44The Babadook isn't real, Samuel.
01:48It's just something you've made up in your stupid little head.
01:51I just didn't want you to let it in!
01:53The film gets its notoriety from the lack of conventional jump scares
01:57and the masterful employment of raw horror elements,
02:00exactly the kind of movie you should watch in a big group,
02:02with the lights on and the basement door locked.
02:09Number 8. The Strangers.
02:12There are few things more terrifying than masked intruders,
02:16because they usually arrive with some type of sharp object and they always mean business.
02:20In this horror flick, Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler star as two lovers on the road
02:24to a romantic getaway in Brian Bertino's film.
02:27But things get ugly after a failed proposal.
02:30Oh, and when strangers appear with masks on their heads,
02:33creepy sounds, cryptic messages, and a trio of psychos ready to slice and dice you,
02:38Cryptic messages and a trio of psychos ready to slice and dice the surprised couple
02:42are just a few of the elements that make this a terrifying watch.
02:46Just try watching it alone. You'll spend more time watching the window.
02:56Number 7. The Silence of the Lambs.
02:59Just the name Hannibal Lecter is enough to scare people up.
03:02The Silence of the Lambs is where the character truly left Hart's thumping,
03:07and that's despite the fact that Lecter is hardly in the film.
03:10You think if you save poor Catherine, you could make them stop, don't you?
03:15You think if Catherine lives, you won't wake up in the dark ever again.
03:19The story is about FBI trainee Clarice Starling's pursuit of a depraved individual known as Buffalo Bill.
03:25The dark path the heroine takes to find the villain isn't pleasant to watch.
03:30The movie shows just how fiendish a person can be,
03:33as the likes of Lecter and Bill represent the worst in humanity.
03:37Thanks to stellar direction and a chilling soundtrack,
03:40viewers will feel like they just might be the next target.
03:43The film lives up to its reputation by keeping tension at its peak,
03:47particularly during the film's night vision sequence.
03:59Number 6. The Conjuring.
04:01You know that you probably picked the wrong home to move into
04:04when your dog mysteriously dies during your first few days,
04:07and spirits begin to express a desire to, um, end you.
04:13Such was the case in The Conjuring,
04:15where Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga star as real-life ghost investigators,
04:19attempting to stop a doll from committing bloody murder.
04:22You know the drill. Exorcisms, horrible screams, slow insanity.
04:26But James Wan's film offered much more than the usual genre shenanigans.
04:30It made people paranoid and afraid of being slaughtered
04:33by a smiley yet torn-up doll named Annabelle.
04:40Number 5. Talk to Me.
04:42Ever get the feeling that you're not alone, even when you are?
04:45Well, Talk to Me will make that feeling stick in the worst ways.
04:49Here, friends gathered at a party use an embalmed hand to communicate with the dead.
04:54The catch is that breaking the allotted time will let the spirits loose.
04:58Eighty-three seconds, Joss! Get it open!
05:00I'll split you.
05:01All right, you're in now.
05:02I'll split you!
05:03When the main character does just that, it's time for her and her friends to suffer.
05:07The combination of Talk to Me's layered characters
05:10and use of practical effects make it dangerously realistic.
05:14The longer the film goes, the more you'll feel as if this could happen to you.
05:18It's an efficiently made horror-thriller that will send shivers up your spine
05:22if you're by yourself.
05:24I am ending this!
05:26You.
05:28Don't thank him.
05:31He's ours.
05:33Number four, The Blair Witch Project.
05:35As one of the most successful indie films of all time
05:38and a defining film of the found-footage genre,
05:41The Blair Witch Project was a national mystery upon release.
05:44After immediately acknowledging the disappearance of three students,
05:47the filmmakers spun a dramatic tale of a Maryland witch
05:50and a brilliant internet marketing campaign led audiences to believe
05:53that the film was a genuine documentary.
05:55The frightening ending has since become iconic
05:57and made us believe that anything is possible when it comes to the supernatural.
06:01I am so, so sorry for everything that has happened.
06:08Number three, Wreck.
06:10It all started when Jennifer hurls all over her mother.
06:13This real-time Barcelona shot horror hit theaters in 2007
06:17and featured a most unusual night shift for a TV reporter and her cameraman.
06:21As the sickness takes hold of the community,
06:23another shocking truth is revealed.
06:25And, well, it's not a good one.
06:27Nobody wants to be snatched up and taken to hell.
06:30At least, it's not on our bucket list.
06:39Number two, The Descent.
06:41Going on a thrill-seeking trip with friends is always fun.
06:45Except, of course, when you find yourself surrounded by humanoid creatures
06:49who want to eat you.
06:50Where are we?
06:52It hasn't got a name. It's a new system.
06:55I wanted us all to discover it.
06:59No one's ever been down here before.
07:01The Descent follows a group of women trapped in a cave system
07:04as their numbers dwindle one by one.
07:06It's a scary take on the idea of an adventure gone wrong.
07:10The monsters aren't the only thing that'll make you queasy.
07:14The confined environment and near-constant darkness
07:17gives off a sense of claustrophobia.
07:23To make it more uncomfortable,
07:25the characters' internal drama escalates into a lack of trust and betrayal.
07:30The Descent is a frightening reminder that fear of the unknown is very real.
07:34You never know what lurks in the dark.

08:06The horror genre has experienced an incredible resurgence
08:09in the last few years,
08:10and this next film is maybe the best example of why.
08:13After the death of her mother,
08:14Annie Graham begins to unravel increasingly disturbing secrets about her family
08:18and their connections to a demon named Paimon.
08:21This supernatural force is unrelenting in its quest to find a host,
08:24which comes at an enormous cost to Annie.
08:26Unlike the majority of horror films,
08:28director Ari Aster doesn't rely on jump scares or over-the-top gore
08:32and instead crafts a slow-building and deeply disturbing story
08:35that chills the audience more than these effects ever could.
08:38I felt his presence in the room.
08:41I felt his presence in the room.
08:44Annie, this is real.
08:46That being said,
08:47it's best to gavish some family members around for this thrill ride.
08:50You scared me!
08:54What the hell?
