Does Junior Firpo get a new contract?

Graham and Joe debate whether left-back Junior Firpo will be given a new deal when his expires next summer

00:00Shall we talk about Junior Firpo's future? Because it's coming up to six months until

00:11his contract expires. Throughout the past 12 months, he's been one of the best players

00:15and consistent players in the Leeds team, now spending between four and six weeks out.

00:21Farke said today that it's not the time right now to discuss the potential of a contract

00:27renewal or his future, that general gist of topic, because of how many games there

00:34are and how they're all coming thick and fast. But at some point you do have to have that

00:38conversation, particularly given that from January the 1st, Firpo can sign a pre-contract

00:45agreement with non-domestic teams, so basically any foreign club. So, for example, a team

00:52in Spain.

00:53I'm going to ask you a yes or no question. It's May 2025, whatever happens at the end

00:58of Leeds' season happens, regardless of Premier League or Championship, do you offer Junior

01:10Leeds are going to have to do, in the event of promotion, a grand body of work when it

01:17comes to recruitment. They're going to have to bring in a lot of players. I think they're

01:22probably going to want a starting left back. But the age Junior Firpo is, the experience

01:27he has, the identification he's got with the club, the attacking ability he's got, if you're

01:32needing a goal late in a game, he's a very, very offensive left back. If Daniel Farke

01:38is still in charge, he knows Farke's system. I think he's done enough. And I also think

01:43that you need to maybe not only judge his struggle, shall we say, initially in the Premier

01:49League, as an ability thing, but also a context thing of being in a team that was struggling,

01:55a team that was struggling to defend, a team that went through lots of managerial changes,

01:59and also his injury situation and his illness situation and the availability issues he had.

02:05I'm not saying that it's a clean slate or whatever, and that you just start him at full

02:10back and hope for the best. But I'm saying he certainly wouldn't be a bad squad player

02:14to have.
