For the final part of our series with Shallows Studio, I spoke to Melissa at Shallows about her own business, her love of Manchester and why it means so much that this city is so welcoming of difference.

00:00Hi, I'm Melissa. I own Sorceress Beauty and I do facials, massage and crystal healing at Shallows in Manchester.

00:07Here at Manchester World we're keen to build up as many great local independent businesses as we can

00:12and Shallows Studio is the perfect example of what can happen when creative, like-minded people come together.

00:17We've been speaking to Melissa.

00:19So when I was a kid I used to make like fake salons for my mum and I even used to paint my dad's bowl dead

00:25but I just wanted to like, I always wanted to make people feel good about themselves basically

00:29and I wanted to create somewhere that was like a safe space for people to feel good

00:33and a lot of the beauty industry, you go into some of them and they're like a bit different

00:38but we embrace different and I definitely do because like, look at me.

00:44So I did a two-year course to start off with in beauty therapy

00:48so I did everything from like massage, facials

00:51but I always found that holistic treatments and spiritual healing

00:56not only does it make you feel good physically, but emotionally as well.

01:01I've been at Shallows nearly a year now.

01:03I did work for like, employed at one point

01:06but now I thought, spread my wings, I'm going to go for it

01:10and I've loved every single minute of it.

01:13Shallows going from like being in an abandoned swimming pool

01:16was having to wear masks and all sorts

01:18couldn't even see one side of the room to the other

01:20because they're a little brush and pan

01:22so I think how it's become now is just mind-blowing to me.

01:25So it's everything from like different types of facials

01:28like holistic facials, like aromatherapy and stuff

01:30but then I do the more advanced things like microneedling, chemical peels

01:34but they all involve crystal healing.

01:36Manchester, I just love it so much.

01:38We all are different in our own way

01:40but we all embrace each other for that

01:42and Manchester's just, it's my heart basically

01:46and it is for a lot of other people as well

01:50and with the way that we all are

01:53we're like the Busy Bees, innit?

01:55We're all just the Busy Bees

01:56and we're all different in our own way

01:58and that's Manchester is.
