00:00In an article titled What is Men's Flu? published by the British Medical Journal on 27 November
00:222024, the author admitted that, unlike women, men generally tend to
00:29exaggerate the severity of their symptoms, it does not exclude the real possibility that men
00:34can actually respond to viral respiratory diseases in a different way than women,
00:40as if the latter are able to activate immune responses that are more vital and efficient
00:45due to factors that belong to their constitution, to their physiology.
00:59In fact, there is only one disease, and it is the same in both men and women,
01:06if ever the only thing that can change is the different subjective perception of the
01:11symptomatology. And this is a topic that has actually been debated for some time now,
01:16but without so far reaching a scientifically founded and above all shared conclusion.
01:23From here then a series of questions, and that is, the concept of male influence,
01:30is it by chance linked to that typically male hypochondria that also led to the definition
01:37of the so-called Fyfone man syndrome, or is there something true in the concept of male influence?
01:44In reality, as in a different way the symptomatology of a heart attack or
01:49a depression or a rheumatic disease, depending on whether the patient is a man or a woman,
01:55it is not to be excluded the possibility that men suffer respiratory viruses in a different way
02:00than women, and not only for a characteristic fact. And in this regard, there are those who have
02:06tried to give scientific justifications. Most of the studies that have been published
02:12on the subject are evidently referring to the hormonal differences
02:18that would be able to cause in two sexes a different antibody response already to
02:25anti-influenza vaccination. In particular, according to some, higher levels of testosterone,
02:32which is the most classic of male sexual hormones, would somehow lead to a lower
02:38production of antibodies, that is, they would weaken the antibody response to vaccination,
02:44so that the man, even if vaccinated, could have a possible heavier
02:49influential form, with slightly more severe symptoms. According to others,
02:54instead, higher levels of estrogens, which are instead female sexual hormones,
03:01would improve in some way the outcomes of respiratory diseases produced by viral infections,
03:08such as MERS or COVID-19, and the same estrogens would also be able to make
03:17women less susceptible to any viral infections, such as dengue or hepatitis B.
03:23Moreover, there are a series of epidemiological observations, also conducted for several years,
03:29which tell us that, compared to women, the influence on men seems to determine a greater
03:37number of recoveries, it seems to determine a greater number of deaths and, moreover, men
03:42would take several days to recover from an influential form compared to women, with an
03:48average of three days against a day and a half. The topic has also been given to an anthropological
03:54reading by those who have hypothesized that, in the various phases of their evolutionary path,
04:00man has acquired new adaptive abilities that have allowed him,
04:05perhaps through a longer rest, to conserve energy during a disease and to avoid predators
04:12in times of physical defiance, as it is said in other terms, that at a certain point in its
04:16history man has understood that when you do not feel well it is better to be quiet and possibly
04:23to be careful. But this, of course, also applies to women.
04:28Personally, where an innate tendency to be all masculine, to be a little more
04:34flamboyant compared to women, I really don't know how appropriate it is to distinguish a male
04:40influence from a female influence. What I honestly feel like saying is that perhaps
04:46we need more evidence to say if, how and why the influence is different in men
04:54compared to women. So, while waiting for these confrontations, the only thing we can objectively
05:00say is to pay attention, to prevent, in some way, the influence and, above all,
05:07to prevent it from spreading. So, getting vaccinated, washing your hands, avoiding
05:12getting in contact with other people in case you get sick, are, in fact,
05:18the golden rules to be respected and they are rules to be respected regardless of sex.
