00:00Liverpool City Council is increasing parking charges with some seeing a rise of around 60%.
00:05The local authority says the aim of the new strategy is to encourage motorists out of
00:10their cars and onto public transport. For those continuing to drive into the city centre,
00:14new tighter enforcement will be in place to deter illegal and dangerous parking.
00:19The council controls 28% of parking across the city and up till now has on average charged 47%
00:26less than private sector car parks and other core cities for equivalent parking provision.
00:31The council currently generates £3.839 million from its parking service annually.
00:36The average uplift will be around 40% for its multi-storey car parks, 47% for its on-street
00:42parking and 57% for the on-street parking bays. The increases, if approved, will be introduced
00:49from March 2025. The council is in the process of hiring 52 new enforcement staff to help tackle
00:55parking issues which are a regular source of complaints from residents.
