Planting 950 bulbs to celebrate 950 years of Chichester Cathedral

Estate staff planted 950 bulbs to celebrate Chichester Cathedral's 950th anniversary next year.

00:00Hello, I'm Vicky. I'm Estates Coordinator at Chichester Cathedral.

00:04Fantastic, and so obviously you've got lots of volunteers, lots of school children out today planting bulbs.

00:09What's that in aid of? What's going on?

00:12Well, we are delighted because we've just received the Golden Eco-Church Award.

00:18So it's a celebration of the cathedral and to mark this really amazing occasion.

00:25And I think for you especially, if you're Estates Coordinator, it's a reflection of your hard work and your team's hard work.

00:32So it seems like a real stamp of approval for the things you do here.

00:36So it must be especially validating for you, I guess.

00:39Yes, it has been an incredible effort across so many different communities here at the cathedral.

00:46So we've all been working really hard and it's amazing to have everybody so hard.

00:53And it feels like a reflection of all the changes.

00:57What does it mean to be, you know, what's the importance of the environment to you, to the community here at the cathedral?

01:03What does it mean to be putting back into ecosystems and I'm going to say the environment again.

01:08I'm just going to use that word. But you know what I mean, yeah.

01:11Well, the cathedral is a safe journey. It's something that links with our mission and to care for God's creation.

01:20And so, you know, it's about supporting nature, which is really under pressure at the moment.

01:28And also to think about our common good and about future generations and to reduce our impact as an organisation and as a church.

01:38And what are your role? What does your role involve in that in that respect?

01:42So you're outside of sort of boulder planting. Like how does how does it all work?

01:46And what does that look like day to day? Again, if that makes any sense at all?

01:49Yeah, it does. So we're looking at our attitudes and embedding sustainable principles.

01:55So when we make choices, we're looking into becoming more sustainable ways of living.

02:02So that's not just the land. So it could be looking at our borders to improve the plants and increasing nature, increasing biodiversity.

02:13It's insulation of our buildings. It's using low energy homes.

02:21And that festival, for instance, uses wire, chicken wire, instead of boat, which is quite a use.

02:33Yeah, it's looking at all of the different elements of what we do here.
