A dazzling candlelit concert in Chichester Cathedral is the promise with The Four Seasons and The Lark Ascending performed by London Concertante on Friday, October 3 at 8pm.
Transcript
00:00Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewlett, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers.
00:05Lovely to speak to Chris Christ, Artistic Director of the London Contratante, and you
00:10are heading back to Chichester, a very familiar favourite place for you, a place where you've
00:14built up a really lovely rapport with audiences. And we were just talking about the way that
00:18audience rapport, audience relationship has changed in the classical world, hasn't it?
00:22Profoundly in the 35 years or so that you've been together as an ensemble.
00:27Profoundly Yeah, it's changed beyond recognition. And I think
00:30any way that we can engage with an audience in the modern way, where they feel a part of what
00:37we're presenting and a part of the ensemble can only be a positive thing. And that's,
00:41it's always such a wonderful response that we get from the audience in Chichester.
00:44Profoundly In a way, it used to be about the distance,
00:47didn't it? But the distance is precisely what you're breaking down now, isn't it?
00:50Profoundly Exactly. And that's about how we present
00:54ourselves on stage. You know, we're always talking to our audience. We're always giving
00:58information about the pieces, but in a really engaging way. And we're trying to be humorous
01:02and showing a human side to being performers. We're not these austere characters on stage.
01:07We are just regular humans who happen to really love performing.
01:11Profound Which, of course,
01:12has the added bonus that makes it all the more enjoyable for you, doesn't it? If you can have
01:16that proper rounded rapport relationship with your audience.
01:19Profoundly It really does. And you also see it,
01:20you see it on the faces of people when you're, when you're looking out. And if you see a bunch
01:24of beaming, smiling people in front of you, it is so much easier to perform. And actually,
01:29that's one of the interesting things. Audiences don't necessarily understand their role in a
01:34performance. They have to be involved in it. And unless we as performers give them that opportunity,
01:40they can't get involved. And it gives us so much back when we're performing, if we see that
01:44there's an engaged, there's an engaged audience in front of us.
01:47Profound Absolutely. And rather a lovely
01:49programme you have for Churches Cathedral, October the 3rd.
01:52Profound Yeah, it's, it's absolutely beautiful.
01:55We start with a classic Mozart, Marriage of Figaro Overture. And of course, the headline
02:00is the Four Seasons Vivaldi's masterpiece. But in the middle of that is Vaughan Williams'
02:06Lark Ascending, the most beautiful and ethereal piece of music you can ever hope to imagine
02:10in such an inspiring space. Profound The most beautiful piece
02:13ever written, possibly, some would say.
02:15Profound One of them, for sure. I mean,
02:17just the way it floats up into the air is really magical.
02:21Profound And absolutely, this is part of your
02:24ongoing relationship with Chichester, isn't it?
02:26Profound Exactly. Yeah, we love to bring different
02:29programmes, and we've got a whole bunch of programmes through the year. A really varied
02:33set of programmes, from our Ella Fitzgerald show to this Baroque programme, essentially. And then,
02:40of course, Christmas at the Movies, one of our long-standing favourites in our V&E show as well,
02:45so plenty to enjoy. Profound Fantastic. Well, Chris,
02:48really good to speak to you. Good luck. Profound Likewise. Thanks so much.
02:50Profound Thank you.
