ACC Bets After the Latest CFB Playoff Rankings

Femi discusses his thoughts on the SMU Mustangs and their chances to reach the 12-team College Football playoffs

00:03Like we saw last night, the committee,

00:05go ahead and respect the ACC

00:07because for the first time since doing these rankings,

00:09this was the fourth version of the rankings.

00:12We do not have four SEC teams in, which makes sense.

00:14SEC crapped the bed last Saturday.

00:17All three of those teams, Bama, Ole Miss, A&M,

00:19they all lost, but we now have a second ACC team

00:22in the current bracket, and that's SMU.

00:24And SMU is the 10 seed,

00:26but they're actually the ninth ranked team.

00:28So you have Miami at six, SMU at nine,

00:31and the committee is telling you

00:32they respect this conference.

00:34Unlike the Big 12 to where their highest ranked team

00:36is Arizona State at 16,

00:38the committee is showing respect to the ACC,

00:40which, oh, by the way, when Miami lost to Georgia Tech,

00:43they went from like third to eighth.

00:45Like they think highly of this conference,

00:47and I think we're setting up to be in a scenario

00:49to where if SMU takes care of business on Saturday,

00:52if they beat Cal, I think that SMU is just it.

00:55Like as long as they don't lose by 40

00:59against Miami in the ACC title game,

01:00and if it's SMU and Miami,

01:01those teams take care of business this Saturday,

01:03and it's respectable, at minus 175,

01:06which is where the Mustangs sit right now

01:08to make the college football playoff,

01:09I think they get in

01:10because we're talking about it next Saturday,

01:12top 10 showdown, SMU and Miami.

01:15That is a top 10 game, and the loser of that game

01:17is gonna be seen as, yeah, great season,

01:20you lost to a good team, we're still gonna reward you.

01:22Because I think this is the hypothesis

01:24that I sort of have right now

01:25with the college football playoff, the 12 team playoff.

01:28I think they're gonna want to reward-

01:31Let's go, let's do it.

01:34Yeah, and that's where it ends.

01:35I think the committee is gonna want to reward teams

01:38that make the conference title game,

01:39because that's been the conversation,

01:41especially in the SEC,

01:42like when Lane Kiffin came out and was like,

01:44hey, I mean, we'd rather not play the conference title game

01:46because that's another chance that we might lose.

01:48They're very aware of that mindset,

01:50and I think they're gonna want to reward teams

01:52that actually get there.

01:53As long as you're there with, at worst,

01:55two losses, maybe one loss.

01:56If you're A&M and you lose in the conference title game,

01:59you're now at four losses,

02:00they're not gonna reward you.

02:01You have ample opportunity to go ahead

02:03and get a big win to ultimately get there.

02:05But a team like SMU, who only has one loss,

02:07if they lose to Miami,

02:08they're gonna be like, you know what?

02:10Tough loss, you were an underdog,

02:12let's just still put you into the playoff

02:13because we're not gonna put you behind

02:14one of these three loss teams,

02:16even though the three loss teams like Alabama

02:18are a much bigger draw,

02:19they have a much bigger kind of program prestige.

02:22I do think SMU would still get in.

02:24Just a nudge, it'll be a little bit hairy,

02:25and you'll be sweating it out on Selection Sunday.

02:28But I do think that SMU would get in

02:30if they lose to Miami next Saturday in the ACC title game.

02:33I think SMU, as long as they beat Cal,

02:35is in the college football playoff.

02:37So SMU plus 150, a bet for you, yes or no?

02:41They are, that's plus 150 to win the ACC.

02:43I would rather bet the minus 175

02:46for them to make the playoff.

02:47I think that's where there's a little bit of a difference.

02:48Like the Big 12, I'm like,

02:49hey, they gotta win to get in.

02:50So that's a bet for you, SMU minus 175,

02:52you wanna lay that with SMU, you're in.

02:54I wanna lay it, yep, yep, I wanna lay it.

02:55Because they're 13 and a half on Saturday against Cal.

02:58They win that game, I think they're just in.
