Record 281 aid workers killed in 2024, says UN

A staggering 281 aid workers have been killed around the world so far this year, making 2024 the deadliest year for humanitarians, says the UN. "These are numbers that defy comprehension, and killing of aid workers may amount to, I should say, war crimes," explains Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), during a press briefing in Geneva, Switzerland.

00:00Before the year is even over, 2024 has become the deadliest on record for humanitarian personnel worldwide.

00:09We have now reached and recorded deaths of 281 aid workers this year, surpassing the previous record from the whole of last year, which itself a record was 280.

00:23The war in Gaza is driving up the numbers, and the latest entry into the Aid Worker Security Database for this November is 10 national staff killed in Gaza.

00:34Since 7th of October last year, at least 333 aid workers have been killed in Gaza alone.

00:42Most were staff members of UNHWA and our colleagues.
