00:00There's a sombre mood here at Hyde Park in Sydney as attendees pay their respects to
00:07the dozens of women killed mainly at the hands of men.
00:10There were tears as people remembered lost loved ones.
00:14Some held up pictures of victims.
00:16Flowers were laid along a string of hearts, each representing a woman killed, as the name
00:21of every victim was read out.
00:24The ABC has been tracking cases of violence against women perpetrated by men.
00:2956 women were allegedly murdered by a man this year in instances of gendered violence.
00:34That's more than one a week on average.
00:36Karen Bevan from the advocacy group Foolsop Australia says the number of deaths is up
00:41this year.
00:42We're losing more than one woman a week to intimate partner violence.
00:46We're losing women every week to male violence and we really need as a community to stand
00:52up and say no more.
00:54We must end this.
00:55Campaigners are calling for more government action to end domestic violence, including
00:59more work to change community attitudes, harsher penalties for perpetrators and better funding
01:04for support services.
01:06We're calling for change all across the board, at the judicial level, at the political level,
01:13particularly with how our leaders respond to our calls to action.
01:17Those gathered here are determined to ensure that the lives of those women aren't forgotten.
